I am fairly new to NC (been here for a year and a half), so I'm still a little unclear on this whole insurance points business.

My fiance was driving back to Indy this evening and was pulled over and ticketed in Kentucky. Speeding...officer says 72 in a 55, but wrote the ticket for 67 (or around that - fiance was ticked off when I talked to him, so he wasn't sure what the officer told him).

Anyway, I know that Kentucky and NC are both part of the Drivers License Compact, and that the ticket will be reported to the DMV here...but what about insurance points?

Are we about to get raped by our insurance company (looks like 2 points, which is a 45% surcharge)??????

Needless to say, I'm not happy about this...fiance says that he was NOT going that fast, which I actually believe. He hardly ever drives that fast...especially wouldn't go that fast in a 55mph zone, out of state (we all know how they love to tag out-of-staters), and it was night time, on a road that he's only driven twice so far, so he's not familiar with the area.
(Not that any of that REALLY matters...but...anyway)

UGH...I'm so aggrivated right now!!

10 miles over the speed limit is considered wreckless driving in Ky. He was giving him a break.

Thanks for that info! It's good to know, considering how often we've been going through there since we moved to NC. Usually I'm the "speeder" and 10mph over is what I normally set my cruise at!

Anyway...not sure that this should really be in the Kentucky forum...since my question is related to North Carolina insurance points...?

I don't believe that is true. I think 26mph + warrants a madatory court date and possible license suspension. Everything under is just subject to the point system.

Yes, 26+ MPH is considered wreckless driving.

I believe anything 10 MPH or over the posted speed limit will take points off your license if you choose to pay it.

So no, he wasnt doing him a favor. A favor would be to write the ticket for 64 in a 55, not 67.
