When we were first looking at KY places to live, my husband really wanted to give Big Bone Lick a try. I think most of us share in the "gutter" mindedness (is that a word? lol) of that name.

What about Penile, Ky, on the original list? Is that 4 real? Maybe it used to be Peniless, and the SS fell off the sign?
One time I came across a town over in Va. (where Ky. came from) called Bumpass. Then I heard a lady from there, on the radio one day, pronouncing it like "Bumpus". Yeah, right, it's bump ass, lady. |

There's a Penile road here in Louisville (well, actually I think it's Fairdale) but it is pronounced Pe-NILE not PEE-Nile(at least I hope it is)

Is that anywhere near DIX, KY; ok it's Camp Dix, KY but that just doesn't sound as bad. It's near ... AWE, KY ... as in "Awe, look at that little Dix ... town."
You just can't make this stuff up .... Oh and Big Bone Lick, KY .... why is it called that? Well I'll tell ya, one of the first mammoth skeletons were found there, it was a big bone and it was a salt lick so it became known as Big Bone Lick, KY ... now don't you feel just a little smarter? I know I do ... LOL You do not want to confuse Big Bone Lick, KY with Big Beaver Lick, KY ... that could lead to some awkward moments. Last edited by Davart; 07-06-2007 at 10:29 AM. |

My wife and I still laugh about passing by Big Bone Lick State Park on our way to Morehead. I've dubbed it "The most popular dateing destination in Kentucky".
![]() But enough of that! My sister had me take a photo of the Flippin Church of Christ in Flippin Ky once. |
