I came here to post the Yahoo! link about this story. I hear what you are saying, but to me, it is more than just bad press. I don't even know what to say about this, but I am GLAD that it has gone FRONT PAGE Yahoo! and national. If it takes embarrassment and the rest of the country to point the finger at this type of stuff just to wake people up then that is what should happen.
Between this and the Yahoo news item regarding meth labs in Kentucky on Nightline, Kentucky is popular on Yahoo today. Last I checked, the minister for that church stepped down and the new minister is allowing the couple to participate in the church's activities. This incident should never have happened in the first place.
I stumbled across this topic on The Joy Behar Show, while flipping through the channels. They were absolutely blasting the entire state of Kentucky om her show. She also said the exact same thing the OP said, "What year is this again?" They went on to say how "it's Kentucky" and that the story doesn't surprise them, and how people in KY are still living without electricity and plumbing and don't know it's 2011. Certainly not a good look for the state AT ALL, and it makes me feel bad for Kentucky because it enhances the backwoods image to those who've never stepped foot in the state.
Is this what it's really like over in that part of KY? If so, I will never set foot in that region.
Yes Yes, and YES!!! If only you knew. I'm a black male; my wife is white. I've attempted in the past to blog about some of our experiences back when we lived in Eastern Kentucky (Ashland/Boyd county). However, such attempts was like crying wolf (folks just didn't wish to believe that what I had to say was true). Sometimes it takes "stuff hitting the fan" before people wake up. Louisville/Lexington might as well be a whole other planet when compared to Eastern Kentucky.
It's one church people. That doesn't mean it represents the entire region. Also, I think the pastor of the church is simply looking for attention.
