Default Anchorage, KY

Can somebody tell me what it's like to live in Anchorage? We're considering a move to Anchorage and would like to hear how people like living there, esp. with elementary age children. It looks like it's close to two YMCA's, the Middletown Library, parks, quiet setting, yet convenient to things. We are moving from MN and want excellent neighborhood public schools that our kids can be assured to attend, and that is why Anchorage seems appealing rather than Louisville.

Anchorage is beautiful, pricey and has high taxes - they have their own school district, fire and police departments so that is why the taxes are high...I think it is one of the prettiest cities in Kentucky.

Anchorage is a high end, executive home type of area with its own K-8 school. It is pricey, but in certain areas has this tree canopy and almost country feel that is probably how many people would picture KY.

Don't discount the city. It recently had 3 high schools named to the US NEWS top 1200 in the country, and suburban Oldham County registered two more. Louisville is a great place to raise a family, and Anchorage, being a suburb, is no different.

I love Anchorage. Big lots with very nice homes, and no two are alike. (No cookie cutter houses!) It does have higher taxes, which are worth every penny if you have children in their excellent school system.

Lots of mature trees on every lot. My memory is that they use to have a rule that if you cut down a tree, you had to plant a tree. They are big on historic preservation. Very near everything you need - stores, restaurants, movies, etc - without being on top of them. (Buffered by some other nice subdivisions.)

My parents lived there for years and loved it. An exclusive subdivision without a subdivision feel.

I'm sure you've seen these, but just in case:

If you like Anchorage but don't like the taxes you might look into Pewee Valley. It is located in Oldham County, between Anchorage and Crestwood, It is an older town, like Anchorage and has the same feel in my opinion, nice homes, beautiful tall older trees, history, and you still get a nice school system since it is in Oldham County. It is close to the South Oldham library, there is a YMCA in Buckner which is just outside of Crestwood (It is maybe 10 min. from Pewee Valley). It is very convenient to things as well although when you are tucked away on it's little streets you feel like you have stepped back in time when things were more simple (in my opinion anyway). Pewee Valley also offers a dance studio (in case you have little girls) and the Little Colonels Playhouse where locals (mostly high school children) put on shows. Hope this helps give you a little more insight into the area!

Thank you to all who replied to my question about Anchorage. Pewee Valley sound like a place we should check out as well. How long would it take to get to the airport from Pewee Valley?

From Pewee Valley to the Louisville International Airport would take you about 25-30 min. Without a lot of traffic.

I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know the Superintendent of Anchorage Schools last year while helping his wonderful family find a home. He was able to share with me some of his vision for Anchorage and I wish that I could have had my kids under his leadership. That being said, I can recommend Oldham County Schools too. If in Jefferson County plan on the extra needed for Anchorage (K-8 only) or parochial/private schools.

I grew up in Anchorage and went to the grade school there. My older brother graduated when they had a High school.I now have my masters and my brother became a doctor. The absolute best school possible. I have not only fond memories of the school but feel my success has been the result of a privileged education.
Jefferson county high schools are so-so. Not bad but not excellent either in my opinion. Anchorage has small classes compared to larger high schools in the county system but there are some fine private prep schools in Jefferson county.
