Hello

I am considering Louisville and Lexington for grad school. How hard is Lexington to get around without a car? I am legally blind and live with a guide dog so how hard would it be to find an apartment that allows animals and is within walking distance to campus?

Is it hard to get by without a car?

Lexington as a whole is difficult to get around without a car, however, the area surrounding UK is pretty walkable. They do have public busses that travel most of the main roads.

I can't imagine that any complex or landlord could turn you down for having a service dog. Actually, I'm fairly sure the Fair Housing Act would make it illegal to turn a person down based on that as it is clearly stated that a landlord cannot discriminate against a person due to disability.

Around campus, you can get around on foot. Campus has a pretty good bus service during the day. The city has a bus serice that hits the main streets leading to downtown.

Thank you. Yes, technically it is illegal to discriminate because I have a guide dog but it actually happens all the time. Unless the landlord says specifically that the dog is the reason, there's no way to prove it unfortunately. thank you.

That is awful that people do that, but I guess it isn't surprising. I'm just putting myself in the position of a landlord around campus, should I rent to drunk frat boys or a blind grad student with a trained service dog. Mmmm.... that is a tough one.
