Benton Kentucky Lake / Lewisburg Lake Malone..Looking to move

There is a reason why houses are cheap around the Lake Malone area...Have you seen the movie... The Deliverance?
I had a Kentucky license plate and still felt out of place.

I have lived in the lake malone area. Things have changed greatly. so many new people have moved in that have criminal records. Homes are framed by child molesters and developers use them knowing they are. Business keep there mouth closed because of the money they can make. Our children lives are destroyed .I pray that the community wakes up.

I do not believe that you are trying to sell homes there. criminal are all over the place. Child molesters frame homes, and the developers use them. old men keep there mouth closed so that they can make money. and lots of sex with anything that comes along. They have to make it some way.

Some of you keep mentioning Lake Cumberland along with Kentucky Lake. Lake Barkley is made out of part of the Cumberland River.
I was in Mayfield over the weekend and picked up Friday's Mayfield Messenger. Wish they had that paper online! A front page article said that Mayfield, Paducah, Madisonville, Danville, Glasgow and Frankfort are all among the top Micropolitan cities in the country. This is from Site Selection magazine. This gives Kentucky a 10th place ranking in the country. Since 2006, Mayfield now has a Lowe's, Goody's, and Progress Rail Services. Walgreen's, Arby's, and Cheers Food and Fuel are building or in the process of building. Pilgrim's Pride chicken processing plant and FNB Bank are both planning major expansions. And Paducah is only 20-25 miles away and Murray is about 20. Now if Gov Beshear would get some money maybe they could finish the 4 lane of Ky. 80!
To check some house prices go to realtor.com and put in the town you want to check. If you click on the info of a house you want to check out, copy the MLS ID number. Some realtors have a place to paste that MLS number. There you can get more pictures and information on the property.

I'm from Marshall County originally. There is a lot of land up and down the lake, most of which has a "Benton" address. However, the city of Benton is never closer than 10-15 miles from the lake. I would personally choose to live in the northern end of the lake around Gilbertsville (which is on the lake) or Calverty City which is about 3 miles from the lake simply because they are both adjacent to I-24. Being close to I-24 makes it much easier to get to Paducah for entertainment/shopping/healthcare or to head down to Nashville. Also, the major employment area is in Calvert City (if you're an engineer/chemist/union worker) because of the chemical plants which employ thousands. The housing market is really pretty similar throughout the county, so it's no more or less expensive anywhere.

Overall I think it's a very nice place to live. I've never seen a place support the school system more than Marshall County does. There's a real sense of community, but at the same time there are enough people that it doesn't feel like you know everyone's business. Exciting things are happening economically too. Calvert City is currently building up a riverport that is drawing in some pretty impressive investment dollars, and it's looking more and more likely that I-69 will be complete in the next few years which should be a major incentive for future investment.

Hmmm...Lewisburg, not much there. Lake Malone isn't very big, the closest major city is 1 hr. 15 min. away in Nashville, and even the closest Wal-Mart is 20 min. away in Russellville. There are a few factory jobs in Greenville, Central City, and Russellville, if that's your thing, but that's it. Very unremarkable.

With Benton, the town itself isn't that nice and the zoning isn't too great, either. Marshall County (where Benton is) has some nice countryside, sure, but some parts of the county have chemical plants. If one can find work there, I'm sure they pay good money and there's nothing wrong with working in those places.

My recommendation: live in northwest Marshall County along US 62 or US 68 near the McCracken County line. Kentucky Lake is the best and one of the deepest lakes in the state, and you'll only be 20 min. from it. You'll only be 20 min. from Paducah, which is the farthest thing from a metropolis (not to be confused w/ its sister city across the river, Metropolis, IL,) but it does have more diverse job opportunities than anywhere else in far west KY. Plus, you'd only have to pay county property taxes, not the additional city property taxes incurred when living in a city limit.

Would like t get info on rental prices in the Benton area I have heard many good things about Benton as a place to retire, I'm from Indiana but lived in AZ. for 27 years, The last 5 years have lived out of the USA moving back in July. Any info would be appreciated.
