I have been combing the real estate ads and noticed that most properties around JC seem rather "shaved" of vegetation. Is it an intentional development practice up there to clear cut all trees? Perhaps what I am seeing are developments that were built over old cow pasture.
I was wondering if someone could suggest an area of town where there are more trees and thus a little "cozier" feeling. Hopefully with all the growth potential in that area, there are some tree protection laws. Thanks-- |

You must be looking at the newer real estate projects outside the State of Franklin loop. You are correct....These are newer areas of town that are built in former cow pastures. The access to these higher dollar areas are dangerous old curvy country roads. (But they are where the realtors are steering newcomers to the city. Higher commission areas???)
Try the "Tree Streets" near the University or any other area of the city inside the State of Franklin loop. These neighborhoods are thick with trees and much more convenient to schools, shopping, etc. |

I agree with Jane, also look to south west Johnson City. Kinda heading towards Jonesborough. Or if you look more to North Johnson City in more established areas there are many more trees. I just can not understand why they put 350k and up homes out in a cow pasture either.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. BTW, are there any tree protection laws in the area? If growth really takes hold here (which it is bound to), hopefully there are such.

The city of Johnson City, or the Johnson City Power Board, or The tree trimming company cut DOWN my 50 foot red oak tree last week. Noone will say yeah I cut down your trees I live on Knob Creek Road and my yard as been destroyed by someone. Each group of people will not take responsibility. When they started the Knob Creek Road Project. I did my part by responding to all the letters and notes and meeting the city held. I told the city whatever you need to do you can do. But, Do not touch my TREE. We bought the house for the TREE it "was" beautiful. I was PROMISED MY TREE WOULD NOT BE HARMED After they cut it down or as they called it "laterally trimmed" the power board engineer said. Well had it been in my yard I would have cut it down before I would have moving into the house. That shows you his mentality. AN IDIOT! He said he "might" plant a couple of $29.88 dollar trees in there place. Yeah right. Plant 2-3 pine trees in my trees place. That will appease the stupid "ME" resident This city has no sight when it comes to anything other than softball fields for out of towners to generate 2 million dollars per tournament. Yeah right. Those softball people eat ham and cheese sandwiches in the back of their mini vans and put 8-10 kids in a hotel room. Moral of the story. Even if you do plant some trees a idiot will think its blocking something and cut it down.

The Knob Creek Rd exit off Sunset is going through major development- they are building more medical offices and developments on that street. It has been the cause of traffic as the road is blocked off.
As far as trees, you can email JCPB with questions- if it is on your own property I assume unless they have an easement they can't force you to cut it down. Last edited by dreamofmonterey; 07-21-2007 at 05:04 PM. Reason: add |

North Johnson City and near motor mile (mall) has some beautiful tree filled streets and cul- de- sacs. I live in Mountcastle Hills/Gump Addition- there are some private shady streets there and also a place called Sherwood Forest. Much nicer than the cookie cutter new areas like Boones Creek. Also the neighborhoods are established (Gump Addition has some beutiful houses) Good luck and PM me if you have questions. It sounds like you like the same private neighborhoods as I do!.

They have no easements to cut down my tree. they shaved the tree in half. its was a 50 foot tall 1/2 red oak tree over 200 years old. They said it might fall. In Charleston SC they have the same tree just larger. With hurricanes and thistype of tree DOES NOT fall over.
