Default JChometeam, I was very doubtful too...

about the yellow light "conspiracy" until it actually happened to me. (Remember the movie Cars where the hippie Van is complaining about the yellow light ? LOL! Ok, I have watched one too many kids movies !)I always thought people should just quit whining and pay their bill.

However what I have witnessed with the yellow light being much shorter at this one particular red light that I go through every single day, multiple times per day, is real.

I would have thought it was just a malfunction of some sort, a 1 time thing, but I've seen it twice there during my morning commute.

I hope they did/do pass legislation over the length of the yellow light.

The yellow light on the intersection at the Harbor House has to have been shortened.

6 Cities That Were Caught Shortening Yellow Light Times For Profit

If a yellow light in the area (especially one with a camera) has a shorter duration than the others around it, you could possibly challenge that in court. The above link is a list of cities that were caught lowering the length of yellow lights in order to catch red light runners. From my understanding, yellow lights must last at least 3.0 seconds no matter what the posted speed is. I think the time is supposed to increase by 1 second for every 10 mph of speed limit past 30mph (i.e. 4.5 sec for 45 mph)...but I am not positive (can't find the official info). It does seem that a lot of places that have enacted these cameras have seen a dramatic decrease in citations (and potential accidents!) by just increasing the yellow light by one second. I believe there is a bill in Tennessee that would require a minimum 5 second yellow light at traffic camera intersections.

I also know we have the technology for intersections to have a "delayed" green light if the camera senses that a car is not coming to a stop, which would prevent cross traffic from getting a green light and potentially causing a violent collision. If safety is the number one goal, steps like these should be taken rather than just reaping the revenue coming from shortened yellow lights that are money traps for motorists.

Bill would overhaul Tennessee law related to traffic-light cameras » The Commercial Appeal

Here is another interesting story regarding red light cameras specifically. There could potentially be a change with what intersections are picked for the cameras.

Whatever the case, something should be done to ensure that safety is the number one goal, not revenue collection. It plainly send the wrong message. Nail the offenders, but give the average 'good' driver a chance to safely decide whether they can stop or continue through on yellow. Don't make people fear the cameras and slam on their brakes or floor the gas pedal in order to avoid getting a ticket.
