Love my driveway. 4 wheel up, slide down. You're in the mountains now.

I happen to have a place Shell Crk Rd. My husband & I absolutely love it, love it, love it. We also have friends who bought a place in the Roan State Park and like us they could not be happier. I do hope you'll find a place and I am sure you will not regret the move . I loved it so much that I recently bought a business and plan to open sometime next yr after remodeling takes place. Ok the best of luck to you & your journey to relocate.

Summersrain, that is some of my favourite lands in NETN, Roan Mountain, Butler. It has that "Alaska/village in the middle of nowhere" feel while still being very Appalachian. Glad you found your home there!

tiger whitehead
Tiger Creek is named after one of the earlier settlers in Carter County named James "Tiger" Whitehead, a renowned bear hunter. His grave is arcoss the road from our property. He has his own "Legend" and Johnny Cash and Dr. Nat Winston wrote a children's song about him.
I've actually been up Tiger Creek Road looking for the cemetery and didn't find it -- would you be able to give more specific directions? I love local folklore and history! Thanks very much for your help!

The cemetery parking area is just a pullover spot on the right side of the road about 1.2 miles from Hwy. 19E, across from Big Bear Crossing development (353 Tiger Creek Road). From there just walk over the bridge crossing Tiger Creek and head up the path to the cemetery on the hill.

I was afraid of the roads when I first got here too, but I have gotten used to them. We are not in the mountains but can see them from everywhere. I did tell my realtor though no steep driveways!

We too moved here from upstate NY (Colonie, outside of Albany). We were used to the "nanny state" philosophy: wide roads, guardrails everywhere, deer fences the full length of interstates, no rock walls within 30 feet of roads, wide shoulders, etc.
Where I live now, I have to travel 7 miles of winding, narrow road with few guardrails and several drop offs in order to get to the nearest place to buy milk or gas. At first I was terrified. Now I don't even think about it any more. You get used to it very quickly - even more quickly when you think about all those taxes you pay in NY for things like that.

We have three acres on the mountain at Tiger Creek, does anyone know how much land is going for per acre now?
