we closed on our property last month and plan to move next spring if things go half way right. We like it like it is and hope nothing changes and a 45 minute drive to work is a small price to pay for what we have found. We looked a places for a couple years in east tn and keep getting drawn back to Hancock Co.Its going to be nice to have the neighbors come help you if you need it instead of calling the cops when you make too much noise or they can smell your horses. Yea I live in Fla.

I was looking for mountain land before we bought in NE GA. I'm from GA and we go to Dollywood every year and wanted to move to TN for the beauty of the mountains and the cooler temps. My daughter and I went Sneedville and the realtor acted as if she had seen a ghost. She was so nervous sh was dropping papers, pen, etc. She had her 2 grandchildren with her and if they spoke, after I said hello, how are you 3 times, then my cat spoke. The man in the office never said a word to us. The realtor gave us some sketchy directions and sent us on our way. We never did find the property. People in their cars stared at us as we passed. I guess our extra head had popped out from under our collar. I never saw any other people who had tinted skin, so that is the only thing that I can attribute the less than warm welcome we received. I'm not one to think that white people are automatically going to be prejudiced against me. My then neighborhood was all whtie and I had great neighbors. I have many white friends and my homeschool group is majority white.

Two weeks following our visit, my friend and her husband (both white) went up have a look around. We were wanting to buy next to one another. What she describes was nothing like what we got. The realtor showed them properties, bought them lunch in the mom and pop place in town, was so nice, sugar would have melted on her. Howver, when they told her that they wanted to buy land next to us, they noticed the lady cooled quite a bit and started rushing them.

So if backwoods folks with backwoods thinking is your idea of a good place, you should love it there.

Sorry you were treated so badly...
But, we're caucasion and that was similar to our experience when we arrived in Mtn City almost 20 years ago from CT and the Carolina coast. The "yu'uns aren't from here" attitude (sometimes said - often implied) was quite common back then (if you looked, talked or dressed a little differently) but I think over the years it's changed dramatically in most places in NE TN..
Sneedville (where our company has often worked) is maybe, still way behind in its attitudes than other parts of this area - mainly because it IS so isolated. Certainly, in the 'city' areas and their surrounding towns, you probably wouldn't experience this at all. Good luck and don't give up. There are lots of good, kind and welcoming people here!

If you want old fashioned people, quiet, birds, and not much else, then sneedville would be fine. there is some beautiful farm land outside Sneedville back in those hills. Enjoy it. I was born and raised there and the schools were wonderful. You can drive to Kingsport or Knoxville for the weekend to "get away and shop" if you like.

Sneedville has the melungons (mixed), and they have people from the Blackfoot and other tribes. I was born and raised there. Truthfully, I never saw a black person until I moved to DC when I was 12. My best friend in the govt was a black guy, and he explained to me that he could not go to Glen Echo (a local park). I had no clue. Sneedville is way off the beaten path. Its a wonderful place in which to live however. I would not move to Harlem or to certain areas of Atlanta, so you can be white, and unable to live in "black" neighbourhoods. it works both ways. Kingsport is a wonderful town and in the country, where you can live with like minded or live in the hills of TN and be so remote, you have to pipe in daylight.

Sneedville has not changed much over the years. We had prayer in school, and we all saw the Carter Family, Little Jimmy Dickens, Oak Ridge boys, and all the country stars. Yes, they would come to Sneedville area. My father built the high school, many homes in town, and many of the stores in Town. I live outside DC and work in the Government. I often think of walking home from school, picking blackberries in buckets, and the beautiful springs with apple, peach, and pear trees blooming. Its beautiful country. You can always go away for a weekend or day and shop and even do movies and dinner out.
Sneedville, and Hancock county is perfect for people writing a book, gardening, artist, or someone that loves the birds and riding horses, etc.
