Is there anywhere local where one can buy cheese curds? Normally I would go to a cheese factory and buy them there, but I have not been able to locate one in this area. I've checked all the big grocery stores but they don't sell them (as was expected).

I can get them shipped from my native state of Wisconsin, but they're never fresh that way I need them to make poutine properly.

Aw, I was going to say Wisconsin too! Let's make a road trip with a cooler! They would be totally worth it. HA

I hope someone knows where to get them in this area. I would buy them too!

I do not know anywhere that sells them. I am going to have to make some for you all. I've also been wanting to make some fresh mozzarella so I will have a cheese fest! It's been a long time since I made cheese curds but yum-o on the best chili cheese fries in the world.

It isn't exactly local but still much closer than Wisconsin- Ashe County Cheese in West Jefferson, North Carolina. This is the NC county adjacent to Tennessee's north-easternmost corner (next to Mountain City). We buy their fresh curd cheese on ever visit to their store.

So now I'm curious. I once went to Wisconsin and my step-son convinced us to try this incredible dish called "fried cheese curds" - I didn't eat the one I popped in my mouth as I actually spit it out - and the only word to describe it was "turds". But now you're talking like they are a good thing. We love cheese - all kinds - so what exactly do cheese turds have about them that y'all like?

I don't see how anyone could fail to appreciate cheese curds.

You got to love 'em when they squeak.

To the OP, perhaps try some of the Amish stores. Too bad they don't believe in web sites... at least they have phones. amish - Google Maps

The cheese is soft and sweet cheese flavor.

I found this website: What is a Cheese Curd?
Quote:
"But seriously, folks, cheese curds are fresh, young cheddar cheese in the natural, random shape and form ... Unlike the aged variety, curds lose their desirable qualities if refrigerated or not eaten for a few days (the squeak disappears and they turn dry and salty). End quote

Maybe the cheese curds you had were old- though they were fried- if they aren't fresh, maybe they'll taste bad. Plus, what they used in the batter could affect whether you like them or not.

I like them in their natural state, instead of fried.I am soooo missing these cheese curds. Excuse me while I make a mad dash to Wisconsin... or maybe Illinois will have some... that's a little closer!
