Moving to Johnson City Area
I posted this in another thread by accident, so I thought I'd start my own.
We are approaching retirement and are looking for a college town with good health care services, reasonable cost of living, safe living environment and access to community/college activities. We use to live in Huntington (late 80's) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As new arrivals, we woud like to rent for a few months before buying a condo/cluster/villa home. Are there areas around Johnson City (including suburbs within 10 miles, not just within the city limits) where one could find the above mentioned housing in a nice, safe neighborhood with access to shopping centers, health care, roads (so as to reach JC for activities - we really enjoyed participating in the college life that Marshall brought to Huntington) at a reasonable price? Are there areas that are safe from flooding? I've noticed in other postings that the Northern area of JC and suburbs seems to be experiencing growth. We will be visiting within the next 3 weeks for a day or two. Thanks for all who reply.

You might want to explore the area around ETSU. There are tons of apartments on Greenwood Drive and Seminole Drive. There are also some condos being built on South Greenwood right near Ashley St. The area is suburbs but about 2-3 minutes from JC Medical Center and about 5-10 minutes from "new downtown" (the mall).
North JC is growing rapidly but the area outside State of Franklin is mostly McMansion.

Thank you jabogitlu, for your help. Is State of Franklin a street, or subdivision or area? Are there no condos/townhomes (even outside of jc) in the Northern suburbia that are reasonably priced (ie. less than 225k)?

State of Franklin...
is a very busy road that's currently the shopping mecca for many Tri-Citians.
Condos/townhomes under $200K are plentiful in Gray and JC, probably harder to come by in Jonesborough (just west of JC).

Johnson city
Thanks Kamoshika. It now makes more sense since I saw some listings for housing and shopping areas posted by a Realty company of the same name. We are excited about the visit, it's now just 3 weeks away.

You might want to check the overall air quality of the JC area- I recall when I considered the East side of TN, I was rather appalled at the polluted air throughout the region -as a retiree I think you would be concerned with areas that might compromise your breathing -my mom has asmtha so I passed on it... there is a lot of industry and chemicals throughout the area.
I have not looked into that area since I settled in middle TN..good luck...

Hello 12buttons,
Not disagreeing with you but curious as to where you received that info? Someone else said similar so I looked it up, all that I found that was from the EPA and ALA both gave North East TN a "pass" and Knoxville a "Fail" rating when it came to air quality. What organization has listed info about bad air quality in the area? I would really like to compare the info and see what each is using as a test method and what they are looking for as far as air quality.
Thanks

I've been here a month and a half now, and the air here is much better than the air quality in Jacksonville, Florida.

There are actually townhomes in Jonesborough. It is a little subdivision called Colony Brooke and they run between $100K and $130K. They are very nice! The builder is a friend of mine so I have actually been inside them and they have very nice features. Jonesborough is the oldest town in Tennessee and is the home of the Story Telling festival. It is about ten to fifteen minutes from Johnson City.
