Talking Realiable climate info

I know this topic must have been addressed countless times, but I did a search and could find very little (if it's not in the title it's tough to sift through each post).

I've checked climate info through "Sperlings Best Places" site. They list average annual snowfall for Johnson City through Greenville as only 4".
When I check it at Ask.com site they give 18". Which one is more acurate?
Average January low temp is listed at 26 and average high July temp was 85.
Do these sound right to you?

Could someone tell me what last winter was like (snowfalls, temperature ranges, etc.)?

My sister (who would be relocating from FL with me from PA) is concerned about winter heating costs. Can anyone shed some light on such costs?

The 4 inches of snow is more accurate for an average.
Temp is about right on except this year, we have had the last few weeks of well over 90 degree temps and lots of humidity, and drought, not normal.
If she is coming from FL, electric is cheaper, much cheaper. The most I pay in dead of winter with heat pump is $220 a month, but then again, been almost that high this summer!
Last year I believe we had a total of 2 inches of snow. Personally I wish we would get a little bit more, If it is going to be below 32, there should be snow to play in hahahahhahaha

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is 21 miles from JC, <30 min. from downtown. For bigger slopes & more snow, Ski Beech & Sugar Mtn. are within an hour's drive.

Thanks for the info. My daughter is already planning a winter ski trip visit for herself and a couple of girlfriends.

The historical average for Greeneville is 7" while for JC it's 15". The JC number is actually for Tri-Cities Airport, the source for most local weather data. JC has usually tended to get 2-3" inches more than the airport, which is about 10 mi. from JC as the crow flies. But in the past few years JC has rcvd. significantly less snow than average (about 4-8" each winter).

Average January low temp is listed at 26 and average high July temp was 85. Do these sound right to you?

Yes, see below for details.

Could someone tell me what last winter was like (snowfalls, temperature ranges, etc.)?

Pitiful snowfall, we had a total of 6-8" in Kingsport and I think JC had a bit less. December & January were relatively mild (4 degrees above normal) while February was unusually cold (3.8 degrees below normal. In Dec. & Jan. we had 36 days in which the high temp reached at least 50 degrees, and we got to at least 60 16 times. But in February we had highs of 35 or under 9 times and lows of 20 or below 11 times.

If you really want to dig through recent & historical climate data, you'll find reams of it at these links:

Default Thanks.

Thanks. Those links were just what I needed. Coming from a place that averages over 4 feet/year, 4 to 7 inches sounds great. I hate the stuff!

Hmm, last winter I lived a duality of sorts so perhaps I missed the snows in both places, but I can't recollect having any gathered snow (versus flurries) in Knoxville or Greeneville. I doubt JC had 7-8 inches, either, but I suppose we're going with historic averages here. As the globe warms we should be getting less and less, too...

Default RE: (to mbmouse) Heating?

You said "The most I pay in dead of winter with heat pump is $220 a month, but then again, been almost that high this summer!"

How much square footage are you heating? (And I assume AC in summer?)
