Johnson city
My husband and I are planning to buy a home in the area beginning of next year. We are looking for more of a fixer uper. What areas would you recommend not to buy in because of crime and etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Like most cities, the downtown area is probably the most rundown and has the most crime. (Although the crime rate is quite low.)
I think you made a good choice of cities to move to, and I'm wondering if the best person to help you find the right house in the right area would be a realtor in whatever real estate company you trust.
Good luck to you!

You can also call the police Dept. If you find a house you like, call them, see if it is in a neighborhood that they frequent, that will tell you a lot. If you have a good Realtor, like granny said, they live here, they know the area, tell them your concerns, they will steer you in the right direction.
Hope that helps!

All depends on what, where, when built etc. Check out realtor.com and put in Johnson City TN. That will give you a really good idea of what houses are going for in this area.

I had heard on the news about a month or two ago that Kingsport has the most crime. I did search the channel 11 site, but can't find that news story.
I did find where you can look up the crime for Johnson City:
http://cojc1.johnsoncitytn.org/Polic...l%20Report.pdf
If that doesn't work, try:
http://www.johnsoncitytn.com/Police%...tatistics.html
The link to the report is near the top of the page. And these are the 2004 stats. I guess they are slow getting 2005 done.

If you type in 'crime rate comparison' under google, you can compare cities, such as kingsport, Johnson city, or your own city, if you want. I compared K and JC to cities such as Winchester, VA; Madison, WI; Dallas, TX, Utica, NY.
Wow - I did not know that there was so much crime here in the Tri-Cities. I live in one of the small towns in the area and feel quite safe.
