IMO there are four types of crime that factor into a relocation: drugs, domestic issues, violent crime, and property crime.

Drug use in these areas is quite high - meth is the one to worry about. But it largely happens without you seeing it and rarely is it dangerous to you.

Domestic issues are also quite high, but I wouldn't worry to much about it. I don't mean to minimize any crime but Bubba and Sally aren't going to be throwing fryin pans at each other in your living room.

Random violent crime (murder, rape, aggravated assault, etc) will be very, very low.

Property crime will be fairly low.

Stay away from Newport.

Sneedville is very, very country - be prepared. It's just a different place.

Thank you all for the info. We live in the country now but would like to come farther south where the winters are not so bad.

I agree. What part of the country are you in now?

And I have to add, the country is not created equal. Some country is more pastoral than other country.

MY wife and I live in the foot hills of the adirondack mountains where there use to be a lot of dairy farms in UP state NY. We came down to TN last spring and looked at the Erwin area but we thought it was a little to mountainous there but we liked Jonesborough and Rogersville much better. We are planning on coming back down hopefully the end of august and check out Maynardville, Blaine and the area north of there while we live in our camping trailer until we can find a home .so I guess the area we will be covering is Maynardville north to Church Hill ,east to Johnson city, south toJefferson City, west back to Maynardville. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Also if any one knows of nice campgrounds in this area please let us know.

This is one of my parents' favorite campgrounds: Panther Creek State Park, Morristown, TN. It should be fairly central to your search. See map... Church Hill, TN to Panther Creek State Park - Google Maps

I'll be leaving Florida for good in 3 to 4 weeks and staying at the Baileyton RV Park just off of exit 36 on I-81. The proximity to the highway (about 2 miles) would make it a good base for scouting the area.

Baileyton RV Park & Willowview Cabins in Northeast Tennessee!
