I've lived in SD my whole life. Grew up in the Clairemont area and moved to Mission Valley and most recently the Lakeside area. I haven't really done the bar scene in a few years, but I do like to go out for a few drinks every now and then, but I'm a dive bar kind of girl anyways.

We both want to get away from the traffic and hustle and bustle of San Diego for a few years. I understand I will take a significant pay cut out there, but I just want to do something I enjoy instead of high paying stressful jobs that I've had for the past 10 years.

Seriously you need to visit first!!!!!!!!- Culture shock is an understatement. You will miss San Diego with the quickness. Not trying to deter your enthusiasm for Tennesee...., but 2 different worlds all together....I give you 2 years max.....Sorry but the 2 can't compare. Actually you'll probably be bored silly after a year. -REAL TALK.

Definitely visit. You may love it, you may hate it. It's going to be totally different. Remember in Europe that our distance apart would mean you'd be crossing into many different countries on your way here. That's a good way to sum up your experience of change, it's just that we all speak the same language.

Also take a look at some surrounding communities. Knoxville, Chattanooga, Asheville, Greenville-Spartanburg.

All I can say is don't do it.....you will be bored, I came from a warm climate with something going on all the time....it is not like that here. It is beautiful and the Summer's are nice, but that is about all it has going for it...expect it to take at least 6 months to find a job. One of the areas largest employers just laid 168 people off yesterday. Most college kids have to leave the area to get a decent job or they end up working in retail. I would visit first, especially in the Winter, it will be a very big change for you.

I was curious myself, and did a Google search. The company is Mountain States Health Alliance. Apparently they are laying off 168, and restructuring. You can catch the article on the WCBY website.

Question Winter Weather

Do you have many icey road days? Does it cause much of a problem? Do they close the town for "snow" days? Is Bristol cooler, because I think it is a higher elevation? Is your weather much different then Knoxville? You have all the major business, right, without having to go into Knosville? Sorry for all the questions. I appreciate your help! Thank you

370z,

Do you have many icey road days? ~2-10 each year.

Does it cause much of a problem? Not really but a lot of people freak out. They make a run on the grocery store, line up at the gas pumps ... quite comical and unnecessary. Power outages are usually up within hours or a day or two.

Do they close the town for "snow" days? Schools close often but "town" is always open.

Is Bristol cooler, because I think it is a higher elevation? Barely, maybe 1 degree.

Is your weather much different then Knoxville? Not significantly.

You have all the major business, right, without having to go into Knoxville? Pretty much, typical mall, retail clothing stores, major grocery, and chain restaurants. Any specific businesses that you are concerned about?

Do you have Costco, Sam's Club? Do the hopitals in the area take care of all ailments/surgeries, etc. or would you need to go to a bigger city, area?

No zoo, no botanical garden/arboretum, not much in the way of museums, no large airport (just a small one), no really large concert venue.
Do know of a couple of people that have had to go to Knoxville for hospitals, but I believe those were for some rather uncommon situations.

As far as what stores and restaurants etc., you can pull up google maps and use the "search nearby" function to see what's available. Just type in a store name or a category, such as "shoe store" and it will pull up a list of everything in the area.
