Anyone know the purpose/reason for the new I-26 exit between exits 4 & 6?

Someone convinced the state that the greatest need for road construction up this way is a "welcome center" somewhere between Virginia and North Carolina on I-26. The center is being constructed in the sinkhole/karst area south of I-26 (Pond Springs road).

I just checked Google maps and they now have 2012 images for that area showing the extent of the construction- a really big area. Search on "Pond Springs Road West, Kingsport".

A welcome center/rest area is of little interest to us locals but will appeal to travelers from Kentucky and farther north. And it will give a boost to the local economy. Likewise with the northbound welcome center south of Erwin.

Default I am sure you are right...

I was just hoping it was something else. Something new/fun for kids in the area to enjoy. I guess the new aquatic center will help, though !
