It's really too bad there are so few, if any restaurants with a view or an appealing setting! The only two I recall that have a good setting are the 'Old Mill'(?) in Damascus,VA (on a river and damsite) and the former Roan Valley Golf Club in Mtn City that has a gorgeous view of the mountains and valley below. And I don't even know if either are still in business! Oh yes, we also liked the seafood restaurant on the river in Kingsport.
I wish there were some attractive restaurants in the country that you could drive to for Sunday brunch! Someone should do that! I bet they'd do well..
PS Oops, thought of one more - 'The Captains Table' on Watauga Lake..

Just back from a short stay in Piney Flats and we took our daughter and son in law to a great restaurant in JC - Picassos. The food was excellent. Fresh, artfully arranged salad with homemade dressing, fresh from the oven yeast rolls to die for, and the Saltambico Chicken dish was heavenly. The chef came out to schmooze with us for a bit too. The setting in the outdoor courtyard was upscale and urbane with the brickwork, outdoor lighting, trees, etc. Only downfall is the setting. It's not in the best area of town. But they have hopes for change there. We'll definitely go back to Picassos.

Okay, just have to give Freibergs a big thumbs up! My husband and I went there shortly after they opened and were very disappointed. But we decided to give them a little time and try again. Went there last night and the food was delicious. I had the rouladen and hubby had pork wings (yeah, who knew pigs had wings!) - both were very good as well as the sides. They seemed to be doing a good business for a Sunday evening. Hope it continues!!

For some great home cooking, Shirleys in Hampton Tn is the best. I think it is great if you have 4 or more in your party there. They do a family style, which means they just keep bringing it to you. And not to far from there is Captains Table overlooking Watauga Lake. Never ate CT, but I've heard food is good, but a little overpriced. But I think that would be a great place at sunset.

Alta Cucina just north of downtown Johnson City for fantastic Italian, Freibergs in downtown JC for German, and I'll second Picassos.

Thread revival.

I'm going to be in Bristol and I have no idea where to have dinner. Any suggestions? I read back through and Bristol has barely been mentioned.

What kind of dinner are looking to have? Good home town cooking? Fine dinning? If fine, I would suggest Troutdale or Peppermill.

It will be just a friends/family dinner. In deference to other customers, since I will have my children and my youngest is 3, I will scratch Troutdale off the list. Where/what is Peppermill?

The best place to get a good burger is The Hob-Nob in Gate City, VA. It's a bit out of the way, but the drive is worth it if you like good food. They even have ostrich burgers, which I haven't seen anywhere else in this area.

Fudruckers has an Ostrich Burger. Plus, they serve Cheerwine.
