I have been researching and looking up threads about meth use in this area and I am getting both extremes. That there is a big Meth problem and its the worst in the country, and also that nobody has noticed anything. I am in San Diego and I know that it is all about perspective. Obviously I will have a different opinion than someone coming from somehwere else on what a 'bad drug problem' is. I also looked at this site, (http://www.justice.gov/dea/clan-lab/tn.pdf) which is all clandestine laboratories. So does that include moonshiners out in the woods minding their own business, or am I going to see meth heads walking the street and have to worry about my daughter doing drugs?

Honestly I think the prescription pill problem is much worse in East TN from my experience. I have still never experienced problems with meth labs or meth addicts.

I think clandestine labs are referring to those that use chemicals, so I don't think moonshine stills would be included. Regardless, moonshine stills are not going to be that common (& they are not commonly caught).

I'm a bit confused by this logic. I think it is quite a stretch to think that because there are some methheads in the area that your daughter will get into drugs. Anecdotal (so take it FWIW), but I grew up in East TN (and am in my 20s) and the only drug around was occasionally marijuana. And of course drinking. Everything else was really taboo. One thing is also choosing the right school. For example, Science Hill is not going to have meth users running around (and that is probably true for basically every school in the area).

Michelle, we moved here from Ohio 3 years ago. It's hard to know if someone is a "Meth-head" or simply poor. Also, the mountain culture seems to include a sort of unkempt look (hope that does not offend anyone, but it is true!) That said, we feel very safe here. And we happen to live "down in the holler" where a few older, skinny guys with long beards and hair live. Meth? I doubt it. More like beer and probably MJ from what we can tell. My husband knows these guys and says they are harmless. BTW, Lasher is my maiden name. )) Do your ancestors hail from Indiana by chance?
