Life in Roan Mountain (Elizabethton: house, homeschool, living)

Hello! We're planning to move to the area and have come across a house with a great price we may buy. However, it is a little south of the state park in Roan Mountain. We work at home, homeschool 7 children. We would go to Church a little south of Newland, NC. Can anyone tell me:

1. Is there a library in Roan Mtn? If not, what is the nearest one?

2. How long does it truly take to drive from the state park to Newland?

3. Is there any homeschool groups in or near that town?

4. Is there any reasons not to move there - any at all? It's good to know any negatives now.

There's no library in Roan Mountain. It's a tiny, isolated place in a magnificent setting. The closest libraries are in Newland (25 minutes from the state park) and Elizabethton (30 minutes).

I don't live in or near Roan Mountain but have driven through many times. IMO, the biggest drawback to living there would be the absence of a decent-size grocery store. You'll likely have to drive to either Newland or Elizabethton to load up on groceries and w/ 7 young'ns, you'll probably have to make that trip pretty frequently. However, Roan Mountain does have a Dollar General store and two or three mini-markets that can provide some or most of the staples.

Ok, that helps! A couple of days ago when talking to the potential seller, he said they are building a grocery store there - so that takes care of one of my concerns. This board is great! Thanks to everyone for your help! Lisa
