When Social Security is added to the crucible of today’s mainstream media it usually involves political posturing or rants about reforms.
One of the things I like to see is data benchmarks about topics to add some of the context often lacking in many media reports.
Ten of the MSA's 16 communities have 40% or more more their households receiving Social Security. The average payments range from a low of $8,840 in Clinchport to $21,333 in Duffield.

There is a vast difference between RETIREMENT social security and DISABILITY social security. There are also Survivor's Benefits.

To get an answer regarding reform, be specific as to which of these you question.

My opinion is that retirement age should be raised. At least 75% of disability is borderline or outright fraud. Survivor's benefits should be completely abandoned.

The figures cited are social security retirement benefits. Although disability is under the name Social Security it's a form of welfare and states have been shifting people to it for several years. It's a much abused system. Many people think the minimum age should be raised to 65 or 67. Congress so far hasn't tackled that one.

Whereas I'm in complete agreement that states and the federal govt have been shifting people to "disability" for years and thus keeping the unemployment rate artificially low and that people are taking advantage of that, I no longer get worked up over it. After that last 6-8 years of trillions going to the banks in taxpayer bailouts with no consequences, I for one am not going to fret over a little fella getting his small piece of the pie, whether legit or not.
