Tri-cities layout
Could anyone familiar with this area please help me out? I was wanting to know if the 3 cities are mainly isolated unto themselves or do you drive from one city to the next and not really know when you've arrived in the next city. Is it like a suburban feel of shopping centers, neighborhoods etc. between each city, or just highways inbetween? Thanks for any help.

Hello,
They are 3 very distinct and separate cities. They each have there own feel with suburbanish areas outside the cities with lots of farm/woods in between.

Mostly highways in between w/ suburbs on the perimeters of all. Both Hwy. 11W & I-81 (via I-26) connect Bristol, TN/VA to Kingsport, and what's in between is mostly rural with many farms, several businesses and quite a few homes scattered about (though not along all stretches). The same is mostly true for I-26 that runs from Kingsport to Johnson City, except Gray is a booming small community in between the two cities..and the same goes for Hwy. 11E that runs from Bristol, TN to Johnson City, with the small community of Piney Flats in between.
If you pull up the map here and click on the "Hybrid" view, you can get a better idea of the degree of development in between the cities:
