Cool Jobs? Crime? In JC / Kingsport

Hi Ya'll,

My family and I are currently living in Kentucky and are thinking of moving to JC. I haven't been there in awhile, but have family over the state line in NC, I never felt unsafe there, but we would be moving with three young kids and two teenagers, so I thought I would double check. Are there areas you would recomend? Any to stay away from?

I also wanted to find out about jobs, there sure are plenty in the classifieds, but can someone not from there get a decent job? ( I truly meant no offense by that question) It's just we've had it pretty rough here in Ky, and are ready to get our lives back. I don't graduate for another couple years, but still would like to be able to feed my family and put shoes on them, too!

Anyway, thanks so much for any help you can offer.

mbmouse has mentioned some of JC's less savory areas before and I've listed Kingsport's rougher areas, you should be able to find them in the archives. As for good areas, I'm not as familiar w/ JC as I am w/ Kingsport but pretty much anywhere near JC's outskirts (e.g., Gray, Jonesborough, Piney Flats) is safe. As for Kingsport, most areas are fine. Hiara Heights is one neighborhood that's inexpensive and very safe. Just outside Kingsport are Indian Springs, Colonial Heights, Mt. Carmel, and Church Hill, all good family-oriented communities that have relatively little crime.

Decent jobs can certainly be had in both cities, but of course obtaining them depends mostly on your qualifications, interviewing skills, and what you're looking to do. FWIW, Eastman Chemical (Kingsport) is hiring 2,000 people over the next few years and their starting hourly wage for plant workers is $18.
