want out of FL
Hi,
My husband and I are looking in TN, around Johnson City area. Can you recommend a better area. We're researching the area. Can someone tell me about the quality of air there. Heard it wasn't that good. What is the job situation? Can someone recommend an RV park? What about taxes and cost of living? We visited a few days in Oct and liked the area, except for the smell in Kingsport. What about the real estate market?
Appreciate your help

Hello,
Welcome to the forum, lots of great people here willing to help, but I think you might get better answers to those specific questions in the Tri-Cities sub forum so that is why I moved it here for you. As to he air quality it really depends on if you are sensitive to certain things or not. The ALA rates Kingsport better than Knoxville for lung irritants and gives it a passing grade but some allergy sites say opposite. I live South of Kingsport but work there and I nor my family have any issues with the air quality, it is actually much better than where I moved from so I guess it is all relative. Look up the air quality of where you are now and compare, see if it is better or worse, that will give you a good comparison.
The economy is stronger in the Tri-Cities than it has been in years and getting stronger.
Not sure about an RV park, anyone else?
Real Estate Market is about the same for all of the Tri-Cities, homes are staying on the market of an average of 130 days and the equity growth for the past 5 years was 5%-7% and this year it was 6%-9% so I guess you could say it is solid.
Hope that helps.

The smell in Kingsport is because of the Eastman factory. I've had a few out of town buyers who have complained of the same thing. I do not really think that Johnson City or Bristol have the same problem. You could also try Erwin, Elizabethton, or Jonesborough. These are all in a one hour radius of each other. Greene County has a park that has RV hook ups. It's called Kinser Park. I know that they have a golf course and they use to have a put put course, a water slide, go-karts, and a pool. I'm not sure if all of those are still there? You can check out their web site @ Kinser Park - A Place for Family Fun

There is an RV Park in Baileyton which is about forty five minutes or so south of the Tri-Cities area on I-81. The park is only a mile or two off the interstate and is next to a nice golf course...
Baileyton is a small country town that is pretty far out in the sticks as far as having your own grocery store and etc goes but we like it.

rental property
Thanks to mbmouse,tinman313,mstephenson and flybob63 for your input. This site looks like it will be very helpful for us. I'm looking forward to sharing with you guys. I suggested to my husband that we buy a home in TN now and rent it out until we get ready to move to TN. How's the rental property there?

The rental property does pretty good here because of all the potential rentors. You have lots of college students, med students, pharmacy students, and because of it's central location it's great for business men/women. Johnson City typically will have higher rental rates than the surronding areas.

Quality of life, seasonal weather, much less chance of being shot while banking at the ATM, change of scenery, and you'uns will love the locals because they are the friendliest people on the planet.

I can't believe how much the residential rate has climbed here. It seems this beautiful area has become a mecca for the floridian folk. I wouldn't worry too much about the crime, its sure to come, it follows in the footsteps of human migration. And you're really really right we are the friendliest people on earth, maybe too friendly. Plus, if you like seasonal weather why not Montana, Wyoming or maybe even the Dakota's...now they have it all!
