Relocating, job at John Quillen VA
My husband and I are moving to Johnson City, TN. I have a job at the V.A. We have rented a house in Johnson City because we wanted to get to know the area a bit, and live close to my job. We will be looking into buying a house in the near future.
My question is. What neighborhoods should we be looking at? I have heard that if you buy in neighboring towns, the prices are lower, But I don't want a long commute either. If someone would reccomend nearby towns, and areas to live for a good price I would really appreciate it. We are looking for a 3 bedroom 1 1/2 bath home with garage. A 1/4 acre would be nice. We don't want a 50x110 lot, like we have now. We are both in our early forties and have one 11 year old child. My husband will be looking for work when we get there. We will begin living in our rental on the 15th of December. We are planning on spending 100k or so on house, maybe more, it depends.
Thank You.

Hello, Welcome to the forum and welcome home to N.E.TN!!!
I would say we would need some more info to give you better answers, here are a few.
What schools do you want to put your child in? Have you checked those out yet?
How long of a commute is acceptable?

Relocating to TN
My daughter is I currently living with her Dad, and attends Lamar. They are living in Jonesborough. I plan on having her with me whenever possible,(weekends, and school breaks) but she will continue to live with her Dad. So school is not an issue at this point. The home we rented is close enough to Jonesborough to easily run her back and forth.
I don't want to commute more than 20-30 min. I want a single story home also. Any help is appreciated.

I just wanted to mention that it is the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, not John. I grew up in Kingsport and went to the same church with the Quillens. He was called Jimmy; however, and not James.
Best of luck to you on your move and your new job!!

Thanks for the correction, I actually have family members named John, and James and continually screw them up too.

Welcome to Tennessee. We moved here from Jacksonville, Florida in September. My wife is an OR nurse at the VA Hospital. We bought a home in Leesburg Estates in Telford which is about 4 miles outside of Jonesborough. My wife's commute is an easy 11 mile drive up highway 11E. The homes are very nice out here and the lots big. Our lot is just under an acre and there are some new homes for sale here. Again, welcome.

Are you working with a real estate agent? I also live in Telford. Cheap county taxes. There is new construction 3/2 going up in Limestone about 5-6 miles from Telford in the 120K range.

Telford homes
Thats a great price for a new 3 bed, 2 bath if it come with garage it will be even better. We haven't gotten a realtor yet. we have just rented a house. We thought we would rent for awhile to get to know the area before buying. Plus we are kinda hoping interest rates will drop. But I have to say Telford sounds good.
