Erwin, Tn
My husband and I are planning on moving to TN from FL in a year or so when I retire. For some reason, I have fallen in love completely with Erwin yet I know nothing about it - just love the way it is represented on the site.
I had seen Erwin mentioned on another post but can't find it -- anyone know anything about that area?? How close are any major medical centers??

Erwin
I have a brother and his girlfriend living in Erwin. Way up Tennision mtn. Rd. It is the most beautiful place on earth. I found all of his girlfriends family to be very friendly. They make my husbad and I feel like family. I took many phots of the area and had them made into posters. We were told by her that the medical facilities there are not good. But, Johnson City is about 15 minutes away and you will be able to find Doctors and Hospitals there. My husband is retiring and we are moving to East Tennessee this comming summer. We can't live in Erwin as I will still be working and really there are not many jobs. There is a new Wal-Mart Super Center there. But I am in the Investment Company business and we have decided to go the route of Kingsport or Oak Ridge.Hope this will help you in your retirement quest as I think Erwin is beautiful. Especially up the mountain Rd. (I think it is HWY 19) but I'm not sure. It takes you to North Carolina. They Live off of Coffee Ridge rd. You will just have to see this beautiful area for yourself. If you are retiring and are just looking for a slower pace in life I think you need to explore the area. If you need more info about certain things in Erwin I will be happy to contact her and get the info to pass on. She has lived there all her life. There are ever several roads name after her family.

Erwin is a nice small town. It's close to the Appalachian Trail (for hiking), and has a tremendous fall festival called the Apple Festival. And like the other poster said, it's close enough to Johnson City to give you good medical help, and shopping, and tons of restaurants. One thing you should know (and this may not affect you) is that there is a lack of diversity in Erwin, more so than any other town in east Tennessee, I believe.

elephant story
anyone planning to move or visit erwin, has to know the elephant story. all our towns have historys but the elephant one is one of my favorites, not to mention you wouldnt understand some of the paintings and store names if you didnt know, google erwin history, or just put in, "the day they hung the elephant" that should bring it up.

Well, we are another Floridian who is moving to the Erwin/Unicoi area - maybe. We are also going to look at the Kingsport area.
My wife was born and raised in Germany and I understand that there are some Germans living in the Kingsport area. I was born and raised in Alabama.
My wife works for Walmart, I am retired. We hope to move in the spring of 07. So, if anyone knows of a nice 2BR house for rent please email me at:
criss719@wmconnect.com
We may be able to buy a house, I first have to check and see how much of a pay cut she will have to take.
If anyone can give us any advice, I would be so greatful.
Thank you,
Criss and Monika

I am from Hattiesburg, MS and lived in Erwin for 6 weeks. I worked at Johnson City Medical Center and loved it. The patient/nurse ratio is lower. It was about a 20-25 minute drive(not in snow). My brother-in-law and his family lives in Greenville about 15-20 minutes away off of 107. They did not have the walmart yet and I wished we were still there. If my husband's job would have worked out we could have, but we could not swing the bills at both places just on my nurses pay. It is 100 degrees today with an idex of 105 with humidity of 100% down here. And on the top of Roan mountain I can remember the cool dry breeze with no fire ants. That is where we want to move back to when we get it all together again. I do not think you can go wrong moving to Erwin, it is like Mayberry. You just have to mow your lawn all the time and over look all the stinking cigarettes.

All -
I love Erwin also. I pass by it on the way to our lakehouse on Watauga and think it is a wonderful town. I think the people have a great town there. However, please be sure to do your homework on Erwin prior to moving there. There are several articles out there on the Uranium issues. I attach one for your review.

(also gonna move this thread to the Tri-Cites sub forum as that is a more appropriate place for it.)
