As rccrain stated, the technology is there, it's just the contracts that are the issue. There's really no reason you shouldn't be able to subscribe to these apps or channels individually and get them through the internet. Apple tv might make the technology much more popular and user friendly and cause some of these networks to end their exclusive agreement with cable companies.

I find posts like this to be infinitely interesting. Retired couple from Southern California, who are a fan of "progressive" and "diverse" areas looking to pack up and move, sight unseen, to the Tri-Cities of all places. A vastly rural, conservative, white area with probably 1/1000th of the amenities that the couple is accustomed to. I always wonder where these people hear about our little corner of the world.

Edit: OP, if you're still following this, I'd imagine that Asheville NC would be a much better for for yall.

As a retired couple I wouldn't recommend Tree Streets. My favorite neighborhood in JC is off Knobs Creek, in back of the high school it has Camelot names like Lancelot Lane and Friar Tuck. I'm sure you could find it on Google Maps. Much safer. Rentals do exist but are sparse.

Regarding Cherokee Rd, the first 4 miles or so (south of 321/University Pkwy) are within the city but past Lone Oak Rd, most of the land between Cherokee & Greenwood Dr is outside the city. The city limits you see on this map appear to be accurate.

Electricity is the cheapest of anywhere I've ever lived.

Water is more expensive than the other places I've lived. I believe water and sewer are roughly half the price within the city limits of JC that they are in Washington County, outside the city, but still on JC water/sewer.

The rub is that, in the city, you pay both city and county property taxes. County addresses only have the one "set" of property taxes.

In JC/Kingsport you can usually get a really good introductory rate from Charter or Comcast, whichever one owns the monopoly in your area, then it doubles or triples after 12 months. JC will soon have access to fiber from JCPB-Brightridge for $50. (https://www.johnsoncitypress.com/Bus...oadband-prices)

In Bristol you can get a good rate from BTES or Charter.

Thank you both. We are in Chattanooga now and we have fiber optic internet. It's super fast and cheap for its speed.
