Horses...Where to relocate in TN...help!
Hi- We're considering a move to TN,we have horses and would need at least 5 acres. We have no kids, and would like to know the best town with the best weather(not too cold). I'm getting the feeling the Eastern part of the state is better. We love more mountains than flat terraine, but rolling hills would be nice. Any help on where to start would be so appreciated! Thanks in advance!

There are several towns that come to mind but before I answer, will you be needing jobs? How far of a commute are you wanting to and from work?

Greeneville/Mosheim area would be my choice for you. If you're sure you aren't interested in Kentucky that is. KY is well known for their love of horses and their beautiful rolling hills as well.

We too are looking to relocate to Tn and we have 2 draft horses. We have decided that the eastern third of the state is the terrain that we want. I've seen photos of places for sale that have some acreage, and it looks very good for horse pasture.

There are some places like you are looking for in the Jonesborough/Telford area just outside of Johnson City.

Hello fellow horse lovers! Bishard, I sent you a personal email about the area, but wanted to welcome you to the forum too. We're new to E.TN., and are also horse owners, in the Piney Flats area, which is on the edge of Johnson City. We like having the best of both worlds -- farmland and animals in the country, yet a stones' throw to Johnson City's offerings.
The landscape here is hilly, but well suited for horses. It gets warm during the day, but the shadows from surrounding hillsides help keep the sun off toward early evening, and it cools down so nicely (a pleasant surprise!) at night for the most part. This past summer was extremely (and unusually) dry, so our pasture dried up faster than usual. We're praying for a better summer this year. So far East Tn is "normal" in rainfall for January, but anything can happen.
That aside, we've met some really nice "horse people" here, and a LOT of just darn nice people in general. Everyone helps everyone else. We gave away a round bale to neighbors who we've allowed to use two of our hills for pasture, and in turn, they help us out wherever they can. Barely a week goes by that they don't bring brown eggs or a baked good to our daughter's house. We love the give and take neighborliness here.
If you look at some other threads on this forum you'll find a wealth of information on feed/tack stores (Mize in Johnson City) and other horse info. Good luck!

Just wanted to say that my husband and I have horses too, 4 to be exact. We also plan on retiring in NE Tennessee. It'll probably be another 5-6 years but I plan on keeping my eye on this forum and who knows, maybe we will all meet someday :-)

That would be awesome crittersitter. We'll plan a trail ride! As Kramer from Seinfeld would say, "Giddyup!"

If you're not looking to be in the Tri-Cities proper, the South Greene (county) area is a pretty big haven for horse mavens, too.
