Hmm, could you qualify that a bit? In Johnson City, medical is huge, you can find a job anything from CNA up to the highest specializations. There are a lot of call centers so working as a CSR is a possibility. Most of these pay around $9.50-$10.50/hr starting out (if you've no experience) with some benefits.

There is also run of the mill work, warehousing, truck-driving. In Kingsport, Eastman is the biggest employer.

Not sure about Bristol.

Default This might help..I hope

A good way to find out what large industries and how many employees each has and so forth is the local economic development boards. Here are the Tri-Cities listings, I hope it helps.

Johnson City
Johnson City, Washington County Tennessee Economic Development Board - Industrial Directory

Kingsport
NETWORKS - Sullivan County Partnership

Bristol TN
Bristol, Tennessee

Hope that helps!

But if you just want a quick answer, I would say the largest employers in the region are Mountain States Health Alliance, Welmont Health Systems, Eastman Chemical and American Water Heater.

Tennesseestorm will become famous soon enoughTennesseestorm will become famous soon enough
Someone mentioned Elizabethton, which I think is a very nice city.. its just south of Bristol (and just southwest of Mountain City), but much smaller and quieter. True, not many mountains in Elizabethton, but there are some high ridges in the area... if you head eastward out of Elizabethton, you do get into higher mountains as you approach the North Carolina state line and toward Roan Mountain.

I took this photo in late October 2007 heading into Elizabethton. This was heading south... as you can see in the distance, there are some higher mountains. But if you want to be in a city/town, with mountains, check out Mountain City, Damascus VA (just north of there)- which is near the highest point in Virginia- Mt. Rogers around 5800 ft. in elevation, or even Boone, NC, which is @ 3300 ft. elevation.

heading south into east side of Elizabethton..... in late October 2007....

And here is a view down Hwy 421 in southeast Bristol (very near my house)... this is heading toward Holston Mountain... on this same highway (if you keep going from here) and go over the mountain you are soon into Shady Valley and then into Mountain City. I think this photo was taken around halloween.

The Plateau is north west of Knoxville. It is more high and flat than mountainous.

You may want to check out Crossville. The Cumberland Mountains are lower in elevation (generally around 3,000 feet and under, although some are higher) compared to the Smokies in the East on the TN/NC line (4,000-6,000 feet), but you could still have fun. I guess the best thing I can say is just visit.
