Finally made it to Johnson City!!!! Now what?
MBmouse, sorry but I couldn't take living in Chattanooga any longer with rest of the family having made the move to JC, so I quit on thursday. However I have 4 job interviews next week with another railroad, one job is in Erwin, one in JC, so it's not all bad news.
Everyone else,
After 1.5 years of talking about moving and 10 months being separated from the family while I was moved all around the country, I've finally made it to Johnson City, I'm currently unemployed However I have a military retirement check, cash in the bank and no debt and 4 job interviews which I should do well on
Now I need to figure a way to finish my BA degree while working, find a home to rent or buy (wife is in a tiny apartment as we speak). I called the movers yesterday to move my stuff from WA state to TN (been in storage since last year).
I can't help but worry if this move might turn out to be a huge economic mistake, higher cost of living in TN than WA, lower wages and houses prices that are cheaper, but not all that much cheaper. Hopefully we'll be able to make it here, wish us luck. At least we are now near family, mom in jonesborough, sister in Weaverville, NC, granny in Greenville, SC.
P.S. Anyone have Sirius radio? There is a great Bluegrass channel, I listen to it all the time, wish I had the capacity to learn the banjo or the guitar, but I couldn't carry a tune if it had a handle on it
Tony

Sounds like you have enough positives going on to "make it" Tony. Best of all, you're with your wife and family again. The rest will fall into place. Hubby and I have always lived by the mantra that "it's not how much money you make, but how you use it". Have you thought about buying a duplex and renting the other side out to make your house payment? Congratulations on finally getting to E TN. Hang in there and ride out the settling in issues. Let us know how the job interview goes. We're pulling for you!

Tony, it is ok. Brethe.
Call me Monday, we'll work it out, all is good.
My personal opinion is family together is WAY more important than the money, so I think you did the right thing and it will all work out.

I've packed up and moved to another state with a wife and 2 young kids, debt, just enough cash to get me there and moved in, and no job...twice. It was a piece of cake and a lot of fun.
Sometimes you have to jump off the cliff and build the wings on your way down. No biggie. It will all work out.

Definitely thinking something along those lines, MBMouse is great help along those very lines.
I think all will work out, I'm in Chattanooga right this second, taking the weekend off Went to Ruby Falls and drove around some, see you all in Johnson City on Monday.
Take care
Tony

Tony, that's great! Right now I'm stuck somewhere I don't want to be as well, but am going to move back to East TN whatever it takes. I'm also a huge bluegrass fan and do a little banjo picking myself. Good to hear that you are happy, that is what matters.

I know how hard it is living away from your family. I hope you'll be happy in JC, I know you'll definitely be glad to be "home"!!!
Plus, if all else fails, you can move into your mother's basement. Just kidding.
There is a ton of live music in the Tri-Cities, with Bristol being the home of Country music, Carter Folds nearby, and ETSU's bluegrass and old time bands & the Down Home. You'll have fun! There's also the Capitol Theater in Greeneville which has lots of bluegrass, and Rheatown Store in Chuckey (Greene county) that has live music every Saturday night.
(How neat, I pick banjo, guitar, and mountain dulcimer, and bass, and can fiddle around on a mandolin. One day I'll actually buy one and set down and sharpen my skills.)

Oops, I also forgot that the Netherland Inn in Kingsport has music, too, either on Friday or Saturday. Not sure if it's seasonal, you might want to call ahead.

Well, since all the pickers and grinners are weighing in, I might as well join the fray. I finger-pick guitar, traverse-picking, folk style. And sing a bit too. Hoping to find a few folks to jam with sometime. Mebbe a little Wabash Cannonball, or Railroad Boy? We could start the City Data Slammers! Or how about the City-Data-Slickers? Oh...wait...how about...the City-Data-City Ditties.
