Markets West at Franklin is a retail center located at the northwest corner of West Market Street and North State of Franklin Road in the city of Johnson City in Washington County, Tennessee. It was previously anchored by a supermarket, Food City. (Food City relocated to a new location. Food City #629, 920 North State of Franklin Road, Johnson City, Tennessee 37604-3668, opened in 2015.)

Lakeland, Florida-based supermarket Publix announced its forty-third in Tennessee to be at Markets West at Franklin. An opening date has not been set for the 45,000-square-foot store. Several new Publix stores being announced now are projected to open in 2018.

The former Food City and adjacent tenant space should likely be demolished for the new Publix. I do not know what the site layout will be and when demolition and construction will begin.

While I'm beyond excited for this and thrilled they will be redeveloping a nearly-abandoned strip mall, does anyone else think it's odd that so many grocery stores are concentrated within such a small area in JC? Aldi, Food City, Fresh Market, Kroger, Earth Fare, and now Publix are all within a mile or so of each other on the western end of the city. I love the development within the city's traditional core as opposed to Boones Creek but it still seems rather unique.

BTW this can't be good news for The Fresh Market. I know they have their niche but I can see them taking a substantial hit when Publix opens.

The Fresh Market, a specialty gourmet grocer, has done well with supermarkets nearby. Its recent direction of closing stores and exiting markets could be a concern.

A good grocery store could easily run Fresh Market, Kroger (filthy), Food City and all the rest of the 1970's operations into the ground in a heart beat.

Wegmans is as close as Charlottesville. Hear the sound of progress coming to a grocery store near you.....

And not a moment too soon.

Default Publix, Markets West at Franklin, Johnson City, Tennessee

Construction of Publix at Markets West at Franklin is projected to begin at the end of the year. The store is projected to open in 2018.

I think a site plan for the redevelopment of Markets West at Franklin has been finalized, Publix has a store number selected, and bids for construction should be due soon.

It's great to see Publix arriving in the tri-cities. I really do prefer their store over other local grocery chains. Eager to see them expand. Kingsport and Bristol should be coming in 2019-2020.

I wonder how soon the former Food City and adjacent spaces will be demolished before new construction begins.

So I suppose they're going with an entirely new store? I drove by there this weekend thinking that would be awfully small/dated for the impression they need to make an entirely new market.

I was hoping they would be open sooner rather than later, but it looks like it be "later."
