Cheapest Places to Live in America | Fortune.com

I didn't see this posted yet and thought it was worth sharing. The $100,000 figure is based on household income for a family of 3. I then got curious as to how many families in Johnson City actually had a >$100,000 income and that number per the 2015 ACS was 26.2%. Family being defined as 2 or more related persons living in single household. I was really surprised that the Kingsport-Bristol metro was ranked 44th as overall cost of living is essentially the same as Johnson City if not a bit lower.

I'm surprised that a little more than a quarter of the local households got to that milestone. I figured it would be 15%-20%, maybe slightly less. I guess a lot of experienced RNs/teacher combos could hit $100,000. Maybe living/working in Kingsport and my social circle skews my perception, but I don't know many people making $50,000.

While absolute cost is a factor, other things are important too. I can't see many affluent families wanting to send their kids to the Morristown schools. I can't see Hattiesburg, MS being that happening of a place. Muncie, IN made the list at #29, but it is a very run-down, Rust Belt town that doesn't have a lot going for it. People move away from the Muncies of the world.

I lived in Des Moines, IA and Indianapolis, IN. Both are far more affordable than Nashville is, and Des Moines is ranked in the 290s and Nashville is at 30. I don't know how much stock I'd put in those rankings.

I emailed the reporter and asked that question because there's not much difference in the cost of living factors between the two MSA. They haven't responded.

I question the omission of places like San Francisco at the top but according to this link we are moving from the worst place to the best. And we won't be living on 100 large either.

No response from the reporter re questions about the methodology. That tells me to write this report off as click bait. If it were a serious report they wouldn't ignore questions.
