Would you care to elaborate on the shortcomings in the Tri-Cities' healthcare sector compared to Knoxville?

I'm still trying to check out the suburbs of Knoxville...the problem I am having is trying to look for rentals that are available because it seems that you have to be there to look for a rental. It seems most rentals on Craigslist nowadays are just the professional apartment complexes or scams... which makes it a bit difficult. Looking at the paper online, it just puts you to a website for rentals which are not helpful. So I am still searching but I am learning a lot from the discussion on the healthcare aspect you are talking about because I am a type 1 diabetic so I need to know this information as well. I need to move out of this state because these hurricanes are really unnerving me at this point. I didn't want to move here to begin with but my husband wanted to live here because he wanted to be by the beaches and warm water (he never had left the west coast of the US) so I wanted him to experience it. Now that he is gone, I am ready to leave and get away from Hurricane Central.

I know this isn't geared at me but i can partially answer this. As stated in an earlier post my mom has Lupus and during a bad flare up a number of years ago she had to see a specialist in Knoxville. One of my friends father currently has brain cancer and he's in pretty bad shape and is seeking treatment in Knoxville as well. Also I have to say I don't trust the health care in this area. My grandfather died from an infection shortly after surgery and so did my great grandmother as well when I was younger. I've had some health issues myself and I can't find a doctor around here worth a crap. Especially in kingsport which is dominated by Holston Medical Group and they are just the worst.

I really don't want to deal with the major apartment conglomerates because I usually can't afford them or can't pass the credit checks and don't have the local references/personal references as I don't have any family and/or friends. The one or two people who will speak for me are out of state from where I live but they don't keep tabs on me. I usually rent from individual people who own properties.

Back in Memphis and occasionally here in Bristol I would sometimes get those little free local ad papers. I don't know what they are called but mostly it's just a handful of pages of ads like the help wanted pages of bigger papers, local handyman services, roommates wanted, houses for rent, that kind of thing. Does Knoxville have those? If so maybe OP could contact them and arrange to pay to have a few copies sent to her? Just a thought.

As far as the healthcare issue does anyone have any kind of actual numbers or facts? Personal anecdotes are fine but I don't think they give a really clear picture. My daughter has had one really great inpatient experience, and some not so great ER experiences, both at the same hospital. I'm not sure what that really tells me about that hospital overall though.

I'll see if I can do some more research on those local free papers to see if I can contact them for copies. I wish I could find a local site like this ... maybe there are local groups on facebook but I don't know if I can get on them without living there. Like I said, I really appreciate all the input.

Trading Post Classifieds may have rental ads. There are various Tri-Cities yard sale ads where people will post rentals at as well. Create a second Facebook account and set its location to here if you want.

That's a good idea. I will work on that Facebook account this weekend to see what I can find for groups. I will look for the Trading Post as well. Thanks.

I touched on this somewhat in answering Wishpony earlier as she asked about diabetic care.

I don't want to go too far off topic but generally speaking let me put it this way. With tertiary and quarternary care you have sub specialists but in community settings the practitioners have to see everything so they aren't specialists. When you go have a wedding dress made do you want to go to someone that sews anything and everything from flour sacks to blankets to maybe one wedding dress a year. Or do you want to go to a seamstress that makes wedding dresses exclusively all year along and thats all they make and they make 50 a year? I won't even go into all of the other issues. Inability to recruit top talent to the area, ability to retain top talent, lack of funding, infrastructure, etc. as I have posted on those in the past. There are good people working very hard in this area; these are process problems and issues that are beyond any one person.
