My wife and I are still doing our advance research on moving to the Tri Cities area. Today, we had a visit with a lady who grew up near Johnson City and still has family there. We asked her what she would recommend as good locations to look for good houses around Johnson City that are in good school districts. She recommended Boones Creek and "Something" Ridge... meaning that I can't remember the name of the ridge! Any ideas?

Also, from those of you who live (or have lived) in the Tri Cities area, I'd love feedback on areas that YOU would recommend that have decent housing and decent schools? I'm looking for houses in about the $300,000 price range with an acre or so of property. I bit of view would be bonus!

THANKS!

Possibly the Ridges or Highland Ridge? Both are upscale subdivisions in the Boones Creek area. Houses in each will be $400k and up. You want to be in the city limits of Johnson City for good schools and are highly unlikely to find anything over an acre at less than $300k.

Regarding schools... what is more important to you Advanced Placement or 4H? If AP is more important stick with JC schools. If 4H is important, Daniel Boone is a really good school in a good, growing area - nothing wrong with it, just less AP options.

I bought a house 5 years ago on 3 acres for $180k. It needed about $50k of work. It's in Boones Creek and roughly 1 mile outside the city limits. I believe you can pay tuition and go to city schools if that is a deal-breaker.

Here's an example of something you could get in the county. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2...42552422_zpid/

One of the elementary schools in Johnson City is called Lake Ridge so she may have meant that area also.

Yeah, we've got no shortage of Ridges. "Something Ridge" could be just about anywhere.

Ha, ha! You know, I thought about that very thing after I asked the question. The possibilities are nearly endless.

I think that you may have hit the nail on the head with Lake Ridge. That seems to tickle my feeble brain a bit.

That's a very good point. I suspect that both of our girls will lean more to 4H than AP. In fact, that came up a bit in our discussion with the friend from Tennessee. She said that she went to a relatively poor county school and came out just fine. I asked, "Are you sure?" She replied, "Yeah, mostly."

Daniel Boone HS is on the high end of county schools. It's growing, well funded, and has good community involvement.

Some of the other county schools struggle. It will be interesting to see if the new Sullivan County School in Blountville is good like Sullivan South was or poor like Sullivan Central was.
