Default Need recommendations...

I may be transferring to ETSU to complete my Masters this fall. I am considering a move to Johnson City,TN and need to know what its like to live there-specifically crime rates, quality of school systems for my 12 year-old daughter, shopping, employment, and anything else you would like to share. I am trying to find a decent community where I can live long after I complete my education. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of this will be relative. If you're moving from a comparable city, retail and employment will be fine. If you're moving from a large metro area, you'll have to adjust a bit. Johnson City has all the regular stores, Target, JC Penny, Belk, Aero/Hollister/AE/Buckle/Journey's, of course Walmarts and Sams, Lowes, Home Depot, Barnes and Noble, Books a Million.

I don't have numbers for crime rates, but we're still a small laid back city. Crime rates are going to be low for any area of the metro, and unless you move to some parts of the Old City I doubt you'll ever experience crime at all.

Science Hill, Johnson City's high school, has around 2800 kids enrolled, and Indian Trail Middle has around 1200. There are two Washington County (seperate system) high schools, both with around 1200-1500, and the University School (a K-12 school on the ETSU campus which trains teachers) has 500 or so, I believe. As far as academics go, here is a link to the TDOE reports:

You can choose at the top from System (Johnson City or Washington County schools) or individual school itself.

Employment will depend largely on your field. If you're medical, you're good to go!
