Default Chuckey area/Considering Move

Just recently spent some time in the town of Chuckey with friends. Most of them actually live in tents on property they own. I'm considering relocating but not aware of the cost of apartment or house rentals. Would probably obtain a job near Johnson City and should I consider somewhere a little closer to work. I also have to look into the reputation of schools. I have one child entering high school. Any feedback would be helpful.

Hi ckfla...
You can find info on city-data.com just put in the city and state and it will pull up alot of info on everything from population to weather. craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums will get you info on rentals. you can also check Home | TriCities and Tri-Cities, Tennessee Personal News and Media Center
I will have to find the link for the school info. I'll get back to you on that.

Had to laugh - 'the town' of Chuckey.

I grew up technically in Afton, but just a quick walk from the Chuckey line. It is a very pretty part of Greene County that is being developed at a faster pace than most other parts of the county. The commute to Johnson City isn't bad (35-45 minutes, depending on if you hit the Jonesborough school zone). Once you get past Greeneville you can generally make 80-85 mph until you hit west Jonesborough.

Chuckey is zoned for Chuckey-Doak High School, which has somewhere around 600-700 students, I think. (It's my alma mater, too. ) The building is new, opened around 2005. The academics there aren't amazing, but it and South Greene are the best high schools in the county system. Or you can pay tuition fees and send your child to Greeneville High, which is slightly better. Still, Chuckey-Doak has a solid and diverse education - a full ag department (Greenhouse, Wildlife Mgmt, Shop, etc), AP English, AP US History, AP Lit & Writing, AP Calculus, Anatomy & Physiology, and the usual sports and clubs. The major lacking is in language - they only offer two semesters of Spanish, which fulfills requirements but doesn't give much choice.

No idea on house rentals in the area. Apartments up here in JC run generally $500-$600 so I would imagine they run $375 - $500 down there.

Here are some links for the schools....
Tennessee Department of Education - Public School District Office Web Sites List This one gives you links by county for all of TN.
TDOE: Tennessee Schools Report Card This one is how the schools are graded.

Hope this helps.
