I have to disagree with a previous poster, as to Knoxville being nasty. Granted, I'm a new transplant and may still be in the honeymoon phase of learning about a new place. But I'm enjoying this area a great deal. I-40 is not my favorite route to go, with so many pretty back roads and I assume that's the highway under construction you're referring to.
Weekends have been for exploring. We've done the zoo (very clean and lots of fun), various downtown areas which are well laid out and easy to navigate, and of course Turkey Creek. Hey, I love to shop. The people are very friendly and courteous. All in all, I'm finding Knoxville is easy to get around in and we still have many weekends of other destinations.

Thanks Joe,
I'd love to see the pics! I just heard one of those angry people at the stop light this evening. I'm really looking forward to visiting. Glad you are so happy- it's very encouraging.

Update- Well, it's been a month and I still haven't heard a car horn blown in anger, I've seen one small fender bender and have yet to get flustered at traffic. The congested roads were the biggest reason I wanted out of Florida and this is much better.
The Tunnel pic is in the Cherokee National Forest and that spot is about 45 minutes to an hour from JC. The Forest is gorgeous and I really like riding through it since it's consitently 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the city. Not that it's unbearably hot out but with full riding gear on, anything over 72 gets toasty.
As far as the weather goes, I clicked on my A/C for the first time this morning. It's mid-eighties and very comfortable in the shade but my townhouse is a 2 story and started getting a little warm upstairs. It still cool enough at night to shut off the A/C and open the windows.
The job situation around here seems very positive. I went on three interviews and recieved three offers, the third of which I'm accepting. I've been in construction all my life and do not have a degree but had no trouble getting a good job. Consistent with the pace of life in this area, there is no weekend or evening work required, strictly 8 to 5.
I'm doing a little road trip tomorrow and will try to post more pics. It's amazing how beautiful ths area is and from what I hear, it's even nicer in the fall when the leaves turn colors.

Kingsport
Joe...
Just remember that Kingsport is a port town, and a manufacturing town before anything else. Its roots are in manufacturing, and defense work, with Holston Defense and Eastman Kodak as two of the biggest employers throughout the decades. A lot of farmers and whatnot just across the Virginia state line in and around Weber and Gate cities. Kingsport often becomes the 'city' for them. Just takes some getting used to and remembering that it's a blue collar, working town through and through. heh.

We are an African American family considering a move to Greeneville,TN in response to a job offer. I hate that in this day and age we still have to consider racism. I just want an honest answer about race relations in the area. I've been told that E.TN is very racist. I can handle it, but I'm more concerned about my children.

East Tennessee is not very racist at all. I've lived here all my life and have never really viewed too much racism. The most you will find would be in rural areas like in SW Virginia and some of NE Tenn. The cities aren't really racist.

Inasmuch as you hate to even ask I hate to have to answer but yes, Greeneville still has some issues with bigotry. Johnson City (only 30 minutes away) is more evolved and might be a better option for you.
Just so no one thinks I'm some reverse psychology racist trying to keep anyone out of my neighborhood....I live in Johnson City.
