Moving to Church Hill
We've been looking for houses in TN for 2 years now and we've finally found our house. Its located in Church Hill. I'm looking for some info on the area.
I can't wait! This has been a long time coming and we can finally relax.
We are looking for some info on the are and info about elementary schools as our 7year old grandson will be coming with us.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be given.

Hi, Laurie. Glad to hear that you'll be joining us in beautiful NE Tennessee. I'm pretty familiar w/ the Church Hill area as my parents have lived there for 11 years, but I don't know anything about the elementary schools other than where they are. FWIW, there are three of 'em: McPheeter's Bend, Carter's Valley, and Church Hill.
If you have specific questions about the area, please ask away!

I lived my entire childhood in the Church Hill/Surgoinsville areas. My aunts and uncles still live in Church Hill. I actually went to Church Hill Elementary School--but that was back in the late '70s/early '80s. The education on the whole was decent, but by no means anywhere near where it should've been. I can remember in 3rd grade specifically--I had a math teacher who was horrible. I wasn't necessarily a bad student, but would get away with not handing in my homework. I rarely did it, and everyone in the class copied on homework, tests, etc. Needless to say, even today, I'm kind of weak on fractions due to not learning them in that class. Pretty sad!!
Anyway, Church Hill is situated in a beautiful area. Where are you moving? The views of the mountains are phenomenal. Downtown Church Hill has always left much to be desired--with buildings practically falling down in some spots. My aunt owns the Church Hill flower shop downtown, and has been there for 30+ odd years. It's pretty safe, and very small town minded.
Since I've moved away (1990), there has been a lot of new development in Church Hill--with a Mcdonald's, Pals, and a couple of new grocery stores being built. The population is starting to grow pretty quickly, with it nearing 7,000 people now.
Deerfield Plantation is a nice subdivision, as is the subdivision surrounding the Church Hill Middle School. I have relatives in that area.
Good luck!

The property is on Payne Ridge Road, I believe. My brain is so fried right now I'm not even sure about that. LOL
My husband is just about to JC right now. I wasn't sure if we were going to make it down there. In March, my husband had a major heart attack and actually died on me 3 times before getting to the hospital.
I thought my dreams of TN were over. But he's recovering nicely and is almost back to where he was once.
I wish I was with him right now, but I'm handfeeding some baby parrots and I didn't want to put them through a 13 hour trip down and then a 13 hour trip back only to turn around and have to do it again soon. But our 20 year old son is with him. I'm jealous!!
I love the pics that I've been sent and after living in NYS for 45 years in a small city, it is definitely time for a change.
Thank you everyone. And Mouse, I'm going to take you up on a cup of tea that was offered to me 20 months ago. LOL

I'm in Troy, right outside of Albany. I've lived within 20 miles of where I was born my whole life. NY is so expensive and I was just listening to Governor Pattison saying on the news this morning that taxes are going up again. We pay $3500. a year in property and school taxes on a postage stamp piece of property. It's 50x100, that's it!
We have a fixed income because my husband is retired military and we were struggling with his retirement income in NY. In Tennessee, we can live very comfortably.
I hope that you find your little slice of heaven too! My husband is from the south, (South Carolina), and I've been making fun of his accent since I met him. Now the shoe is going to be on the other foot! LOL

I've ridden my bike down Payne Ridge Rd. many times, it's a real rush to come down that hill at 40+ mph!
There are great mountain views from the top of the hill and if you head over to Stanley Valley Rd. via Okolona Rd., the drive (or ride) heading either east or west is gorgeous. The other end of Payne Ridge Rd. (at Carter's Valley Rd.) bisects a huge farm owned by one of my cousins, who has several hundred acres on both sides of CV Road.
Be sure to venture out for a Ruritan fish & chicken dinner on a Friday evening! My parents enjoy one at least once a month.
