Also, if you look down 11E there are at least 10 pieces of property for sale. In 10 years, we will not be able to recognize that stretch of road.
I guess most of us agree that all this 'progress' will do little to improve the look and feeling of this beautiful area. I've always breathed a big sigh of relief when approaching Jonesborough - and its nice country feel once you've passed "the junkyard".. That wonderful old Jonesborough hardware store will probably eventually fail like all the other individually owned small businesses that succumb to large mega-corporations. Yeah, it's sad to see JC sprawl spreading out and engulfing pretty little Jonesborough..

What I really find appalling though is that with all the available open spaces in Jonesborough why so much cluster-type housing was allowed? What kind of crazy, ill-conceived zoning laws would allow that to happen? Does anyone know?

With cluster-type, do you mean the rows of mega-condos just up the road (on the other side) from the new Lowe's?

Yeah...

Yes! And farther down the road approaching and past Ingles... I guess the new tax revenues outweighed retaining the natural beauty of the area. In Limestone (what with all the limestone outcroppings and creeks) I worry about septic systems for the 'tract' housing developments on smaller lots. Maybe it's wishful thinking but I wish there were more thoughtful consideration given to preserving the environment.

I can't believe Lowes is going through with the plan anyway, what a concept, spend a truck load of money on a new store in the 2nd inning of a world wide economic downturn.....perfect timing.

Well, theory is that the Tri-Cities haven't been as hard hit by the economic downturn as many other places.

I was at O'Charlies Saturday night and it was packed. Of course, casual dining vs. home building (which I would assume drives Lowes sales) are completely different. But still. We're still doing very decent sales at Target on Roan, at the same levels we did last year. We were expecting to have lower sales fourth quarter so we only hired 40 or so seasonal employees, but it looks like we might need more.... lol.

We need incentives to save trees - tax credits or something?.... There's got to be an award for conservation, i.e., going green.

The best incentive would be to express our displeasure with our wallets.

BTW, what are Jonesborough resident's thoughts about their new mayor?

Nobody ran against him, and I hear few complaints from the people here in Jonesborough. He is a very nice man, and most people like him. Something inside my gut gives me pause when the largest builder in the city is the mayor, but hopefully my reservations are misplaced
