Also since we are talking about winter and the sled/sleigh thing, there is another matter of winter linguistics that differs in the north and south.

In the south, a toboggan is a hat, not a sled.

In the the north, this hat I refer to is called a beanie.


So if someone in Johnson City tells you bring a toboggan to warm your ears, do not be alarmed, we are not telling you to put a sled on your head.

Is there any skiing in the area? If so how long does it take to get there?

For crappy skiing, there is Wolf Laurel or Wolf What ever they call it these days (near Mars Hill -30 minutes from JC) and Ober Gatlinburg (near Knoxville/Sevierville - 2hr from JC but very touristy).

For decent skiing, there is Ski Beech and about 3 other similar slopes near Boone and Blowing Rock, NC that are about 2hrs from JC.

For good skiing, there is Winterplace in WV. It is probably 4/5 hrs.
