Just have to add my two cents! I was actually born in Stamford, too! Grew up in Norwalk. Last location in CT was Goshen, labelled the icebox of CT - for good reason! And that my friends is the major reason we finally moved south! Cold here is not the same as in Connecticut.. Winters there were brutal! Sometimes we had snow on the ground til April.
(It doesn't count but my mom lived in Naples for many years)

Thanx for the responses...
Hey guys! I appreciate all the nice info, suggestions and advice. I absolutely LOVE TN because it does resemble back home so much (just the mountains are twice as high in TN)! It turns out that I lost out on the job I was told I 'all but had' and TN will have to just a little bit longer to have us. It's crazy how those that responded were predominantly from the CT end of New England. I was born in Port Chester, NY (right across the Byram River from Greenwich, CT). I moved up to the Northern Catskills when I was 3 and spent my formative years scampering around the mountains like a hellion. I am actively looking for Government work from Bristol to Deals Gap. I'm currently employed with the City of Port Orange (a couple of miles below Daytona) for over 22 years and I'm hoping my life of Public Service will assist me in finding gainful employment. Keep your ears open if you hear about anything and God Bless! Once again, thanx for all the responses!!! MarkyApp

Hello , to everyone, i thought i would post some questions . I want to move to Greeneville or Elizabethton TN Mainly for a fresh start i am married and have three kids and one on the way . We are in our late twenties. I was just wondering how to go about doing it . I am looking for a house to rent till we find the house thats right for us. How are the schools in those areas and the crime rate? Also my husband works for Davey Tree experts , so I was wondering how jobs are out that way? He is going to see about a transfer. We are currently in Mi and have been our whole lives so far. Very tired of the snow! Thanks for any replies, they are greatly appretiated!! Summer.

If your husband can transfer, that would be GREAT ! Unless you are a skilled professional or have education in the medical field, I find jobs in this area are pretty scarce.... if you husband cannot transfer, then you should have plenty of cash to keep you going until you find a job/jobs.
I can't vouch for schools or anything else, I have only been here for about a month .

Welcome to the board. I was just in Greeneville yesterday. I love that little town and community. Sorry I can't help on figures since I haven't lived there but someone will come along and reply with data.

My husband and I love Greeneville - not too big or too small, actually it's a perfect size town (IMHO) with most everything *basic* you could want from office supply, K-mart, a JC Penney's, movie theatres and a good selection of restaurants. The downtown is charming with lots of historic buildings and being from CT, too, it's reminiscent of towns we lived in or near while up north. In the past, we looked at Greeneville's home prices and associated taxes and both seemed very competitive or lower than other areas. If we hadn't had to be closer to JC I think we would have happily moved there. Actually, yesterday we were there (from Limestone) to go to Lowes and Food Lion. We ended up eating at the Brick Oven - a wonderful Italian restaurant with great food (and prices), one of which *also* used to be in Jonesborough. Unfortunately it closed - not due to lack of customers since it was always packed with people. (We heard it was tax and other issues.) Other advantages of Greeneville are that it's closer to Knoxville and the airport there - and its back country road to Asheville.
Personally, if we had it to do over again, I think we would definitely choose Greeneville over some of our other area towns.
Sorry, don't know about taxation on retirement income except that (as you probably know) there's no TN state income tax.

I don't know either, despite living there for 20 years. The best people to call would probably be the people actually doing the taxing.
The back country road to Asheville? Ugh! (The "Asheville Highway" to Greenevillians...) I admit it's a very nice drive once a year but battling with it often is really bad. I love I-26 for its simplicity.
Downtown Greeneville always struck me a little different than any other downtowns in the region. Maybe it is because of its "similarities" to small northern towns? It's a little like Jonesborough but very much unlike Kpt, JC, Bristol, Morristown etc.

If you've ever seen the very *earliest* pics of Johnson City, you might see similarties -but many of those oldest buildings are long-gone and were replaced by ones built in the very late 1800's and early 1900's.
I think that's part of what makes Greeneville (and Jonesborough) special. They've managed to protect and preserve their early historic architecture - some of it from the 1700's - which is what also makes so many old towns in New England distinctive.
Admittedly, we're dedicated 'old house' people which is why we enjoy both these charming TN towns - and were very happy to find an old 1850's brick home mid-way between both Greeneville and Jonesborough.
And, yes, the Asheville Hwy is a once or twice a year, very scenic - but extremely curvaceous trip! 1-26 is a markedly better route to Asheville.

There are only about 5,000 or so people in the world who know where East Haddam is even though "Annie" (the musical) opened there, let alone been there

I guess I would be one of those 5,000... haha. I'm from Hampton, CT - and if you can tell me where that is, I'd be impressed
ETA: My aunt and uncle run a nursey in Higganum, that is pretty close to East Haddam.
On topic, as far as being called a Yankee, I got the worst of it in SW VA. My name tag for work was forcefully changed to say "Yankee" and I was put down a lot for "talking all proper". That area is a lot worse than here IMO. I've never run into anyone on NE TN that has been mean about where I am from. In JC there are so many transplants, I don't think it is really an issue. Though farther out, where you are thinking of moving - it may be more common to recognize non-locals. Come visit, if possible!
