The race track noise will vary based upon your location. We actually did a study on this in college.

However, this was prior to the final additions of seating which has effectively "lifted" the noise straight up rather than out to the sides.

When our study was conducted, you could hear the noise the loudest in the direction of Tri-Cities Golf Course and towards Appalachian Caverns back towards the Tri-City Airport, this was the end that was open for the longest time.

The other loudest part was heard from HWY 394 side back towards Sullivan East High School, then towards South Holston Lake.

Noise was not as prominent back towards Johnson City, the noise always seemed to travel with the wind which made Johnson City the least loud of the area directions.

Hope this helps, as far as the train goes....if your inside with the windows shut, less than 1/2 a mile. I've lived on the tracks growing up for years and was about .25 mile away and only on rare occassions did it ever wake me or I paid attention to it.

We hear no race noise at our home here in Bristol. I wasnt sure of the distance from our house to the racetrack so I mapquested it and it came out as 9.48 miles. As for trains, I kind of like the noise : ) I hear them very infrequently though and it is not loud enough to bother me. I mapquested from Java J's on State street (right near the tracks) to my house and it is 1.97 miles.

Used to live 1/4 mile from a "Fish Bowl" half mile track in Michigan. The noise would carry over our house, but could be heard very well from 3 to 5 miles out.

We would hear very limited noise, but my grandmother house, 5 miles away would sound like the racing was next door.
