Default How did you discover the Tri-Cities?

I discovered the tri cities in early '08. After a tough break up I needed a little adventure in life. So I dug out my atlas and looked at America. I remembered going through Tennessee around Chattanooga when I was around 13. I awed by the beauty of the mountains. So I though ya know, why not visit Tennessee? I figured if I'm going to visit it better be in the mountains. I'm sure glad I chose the tri-cities. Beauty doesn't run short here whatsoever.

I kept putting money away for months on end... Did some planning and ended up visiting the tri-cities in October, I couldn't have picked a better time of year. The leaves were changing and east TN seen it's first measurable snowfall of the season. I was in heaven.

I'm only 20 so doing all this was kind of nerve racking. I had no idea what to expect when I traveled. So I did it by the guidance of the good lord. I came home in one piece didn't I? I think there is something for everyone in NE TN. I think NE TN helped me connect with god and give me some direction in life.

I think TN made me a bit more religous, that's a good thing though. One thing TN did give me was direction, I could also say some pioneer spirit

Hopefully someday I can call the place home? Or at least visit often and make it a possible retirement home?

So how did you discover the place?

The Tri-Cities area has been a part of my life since birth in 1954. My Grandparents and 4 sets of Aunts and Uncles have lived most of their lives there. One aunt, who has lived in Johnson City for 67 years, is moving to North Carolina to be closer to her kids. I have a brother, sister and parents who still live in the area. I would love to move back some day.

I lived on High Point Drive in Johnson City back in the 50's, on East Sevier in Kingsport in the 60's, on Lakeview Drive in Johnson City in the 60's, in Boones Creek in the 70's and Bluff City in the 70's-80's before moving to Nashville in 1982.

My Dad was in the Air Force, so every time he was stationed overseas, my Mother, Brother and 2 Sisters always moved back to the Tri-Cities, which we all call home.

In 12 years of school, I went to 15 separate schools all over the country. I went to North Junior High in Johnson City, Boones Creek High School (I think it is a middle school now) and graduated from University High on the ETSU Campus. I, also, went to ETSU and graduated from NorthEast State Community College.

I worked for Channels 5 and 11.

So, I guess you can say the Tri-Cities area has been in my blood my whole life.

It is a great area!

Buzz from Nashville

Born, and grew up, in Kingsport. College in Johnson City. Parents have always had a lake house up on Watauga.

Thanks!

I wish my Grandparents were still alive because your question would be a great one to ask them. Unfortunately, my Grandfather was killed by a drunk driver on North Roan in the 60's and my Grandmother passed away in the 80's.

My Grandfather and two Uncles worked at a foundry, which was directly across from ETSU. I doubt it is there anymore.

When I discovered I finally had the means and the freedom to move from Memphis (last child graduated HS! ) I could pick pretty much anywhere, but I didn't know where I wanted to go.
Maybe Michigan, maybe Pennsylvania, maybe Missouri... Since I didn't know where I wanted to go, but I did know what I wanted when I got there, I took one of those "where's your best place to live" quizzes.
Out of the two dozen places it listed, almost three fourths of them were in the TN, VA, NC corner, with Abingdon VA the top match. Had been through the area enough times to know it was a downright gorgeous little corner of the world. The scenery, lakes and mountains, the four seasons with maybe just a touch of snow, absolutley perfect.
Researched the all the different cities and towns thouroughly online, then came here to C-D to see how people felt about the areas they lived in. Seemed like most folks on the NE TN foums are happy and enjoy living here, a very good sign from my POV. Add that to the no TN state income tax and I was as good as convinced that I should stay in TN! The tri-cities area seemed like a perfect fit. So I up and moved.
I have now been a Tri-City resident for exactly one month, and I am loving it!

SNOW!

What a positve story! You sound like you've got alot of viewpoints similar to mine. I too took the best places to live quizes. I had almost nothing out west and load in the SE states and some NE states. Believe it or not Johnson City was like my fourth. Asheville was on there. Roanoke et cetera. The only thing holding me back is family. All my family lives in IL,WI,MN. So to be that far away makes it a little nerve racking.

My family's been living in and around Western North Carolina and East Tennessee for 200-ish years. Grew up in Greene County, so a move to JC was natural.
