Thanks so much, RC and Kam. I've the the direction to go and we can just find the sights by walking or biking. Kam, I'm assuming most of the dam area is accessible by bicycle? I cannot wait to get out there and see it. Hoping for this weekend if the weather cooperates.

Yes, it's a very walkable/bikeable area. You can park at Osceola Island and ride 1.2 miles on Holston View Dam & S. Holston Dam roads to reach the base of the dam, or continue on S. Holston Dam and Meadowcreek Rd. back to Osceola Island (4.3 miles). The top of the dam is 0.9 miles from the end of Holston View Dam Road.

If you want to take a nice hike or bike ride through the woods while in the area, you'll see a gated dirt road off to your right as you're heading up to the dam. You can travel down it (it's mostly level) for another 1.7 miles.

I hope y'all make it out there this weekend!

If I can drag my hubby away from our farm (he's a hard worker) will let you know my impressions. Picnic sounds wonderful. Hoping to get my children and grandchildren to follow suit and make it one to remember.

Beautiful pics, as always. And as an update, we made it for a family picnic at Osceola Island on Mother's Day. It was wonderful. Drove up to see the South Holston Lake on the dam. Gorgeous! Are there other ways to explore the South Holston Lake. Now that we've seen it from afar, we'd love to hike or bike there. Or swim? Any beaches by chance?

Wow.. GraniteStater suggested I ask here and I ended up looking through the whole thread at all the beautiful photos. Awesome! I have this photo as a wallpaper, and have been trying to track down where it was taken - it could perhaps be nearly anywhere in Appalachia, but it does share a "feel" with the photos here. Can anyone place where it was taken? Or perhaps say "oh, that ridgeline says Kentucky more than Tennessee"

And Kam - you really oughtta get a 5D Mk2 and Lightroom and start selling! (not that your pictures lack anything, but the cam and irfanview is all that separates you from a pro in my mind!)

Welcome yumbrad. I think that your picture looks like the TN - KY state line area to me. However, it could be anywhere around here!

Finally made it up to Roan today. Unfortunately I did not notice that my Daughter had changed some of my Camera Settings somehow. Metering was all over the place in the shots. I shoot in raw though which allows me greater control in saving the shots. Here is one from the Gardens.
