Those pictures are gorgeous!
Question on Roan Mountain. If I was to drive there, what would I Mapquest as a reference point? I've been to the state park, but only the lower picnic areas. Is this the same place??

If you'd driven another 8 miles on that same road (Hwy. 143) where you picnicked, you would've reached Carver's Gap. That's the place to park to climb the balds. Mapquest doesn't recognize Carver's Gap but the total distance from Hwy. 19E is 12.6 miles, and the parking area will be on your right just before the NC state line.

Kamoshika, Since I'll be heading back to Roan this spring can you give me directions as if I'm coming from Elizabethton to the balds? I'd appreciate it. I want to make sure I take the right roads.
Josh

Sure, it's very straightforward. Heading west on the main drag in Elizabethton (Broad St./TN-67), you'll turn right when you reach US-19E (Food City will be on your right at that intersection.) Then just drive 17.4 miles on 19E till you reach TN-143, where you'll turn right and go 12.6 miles to reach Carver's Gap.

Bailey, you've captured one of my favorite drives beautifully! Especially love the view from the overlook in the 3rd pic; most folks who stop don't bother walking all the way up there.

Thanks
I realized how out of shape from the winter I am after that walk up... haha.
