Not true. Edo in Kingsport has a full-line sushi bar; here's what they offer in terms of sushi alone:
- TUNA (MAGURO)
- YELLOW TAIL (HAMACHI)
- SALMON (SAKE)
- RED SNAPPER (TAI)
- EEL (UNAGI)
- SHRIMP (EBI)
- SMOKED SALMON
- CRAB (KANI)
- OCTOPUS (TAKO)
- SQUID (IKA)
- SWEET SHRIMP (AMAEBI)
- SMELT ROE (MASAGO)
- SURF CLAM
- WASABI TOBIKO
In addition, Edo offers three sushi platters and 21 different sushi rolls.
Now that variety may not match what you're accustomed to, but it's not half bad for a small city in a landlocked state...and it's certainly not "quasi-Asian."

Gosh, yeah, I'm sorry that we don't offer the sushietal variety of, perhaps, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles or New York. A trend lately has been to come here and attack whatever info we're trying to give the OP's. If you don't like it, get out. Really. I'm starting to sympathize with "native Floridians" here. If we had everything everyone in the world wanted (especially FRESH FISH!!!... sorry... different t hread.... lol) then we'd be a megalopolis, and people would be moving AWAY from here.
Personally, if I ever moved anywhere else, it would be because I found their offerings (whatever they may be) charming. Like buffalo steak in Colorado. I'm not really complaining that I can't get it here.

Hey jabogitlu, I wasn't trying to attack anyone. I was simply giving my opinion. I have eaten in some great places in larger cities, and nothing here really compares. That doesn't mean I don't like the places around here or don't eat at them. The problem is that sushi is not that popular here so it is very hard to make money with a sushi place. Almost any ethnic restaurant has that problem around here. It's unfortunate.
And kamoshika, you are right. Edos is probably the best of the places I've been to around here, but I haven't been to Osaka in Bristol yet.

Brian, jabogitlu, I see both your points, and both are certainly valid opinions. Brian you're probably right that ethnic restaurants have a hard time making money with a sushi place...because sushi is not a priority here. But I think what jabogitlu was trying to point out is that critiques like that touch a sore spot with locals...especially on forums like this where you see poster after poster criticizing the area for not being/having something they had in some other city/region. Maybe it's not necessary to have what another city has. Maybe it's important to appreciate the unique regional character of any particular city or region, recognizing that by its very nature it will have limitations. Hopefully so! Or every town would be boringly the same! You wouldn't go to New York City and complain that there are no BBQ restaurants with a mountain view. When you love a region and appreciate it's benefits, you realize it cannot be 'all things to all people.' I think people who've lived in the Tri-Cities for many years hold those innate regional characteristics dear to their hearts...and rightly so. They don't want the Tri-Cities to have to live up to any big city reputation. They appreciate it for the charms/opportunities it has inherently, by it's very nature.
It's just that there've been so many negative comparisons - intentional or not - that sound disappointed with the region's very "personality." People who were raised here love this area and after awhile become sensitive to the negatives. That's what I'm hearing, objectively. Me? I love sushi - yes, even the Kroger stuff. Will definitely try Edos, and I thank you for the referral, kamoshika and Brian. Cheers! Salut! Arrigato!

Brian1269, you can check Osaka's menu by going to their website, which you can find by Googling the terms "osaka sushi" and "bristol." They're pretty serious about sushi, offering over 20 varieties and 40+ different sushi rolls.

Lots of innuendo to go around on this thread. Please keep it on topic and post about sushi. Thanks!

Let's put it this way. If you want some great sushi, then figure out how to make it and open a great restaurant. We'll all love it. Residents of the Tri-Cities are very open minded about lots of things, and food is one of them.
But whining about lack of sushi is .... well, this is a moderated board, so I can't say it!
