First Tennessee, BB&T, Regions, SunTrust, and of course BofA are ones that come to mind. There are also a ton of little, local banks. Google "bank, Johnson City (or whatever city) TN) and you will get a list.
I use BB&T (checking, two savings) and SunTrust (one savings) and frankly if we didn't have a credit line/overdraft protection from BB&T I would have switched a long time ago. I rarely see them recommended. I can't say much about SunTrust... they do have a lot of banks in the area. They seemed nice but I don't think I would do checking with them.
At work I would see First Tennessee check cards most often.

There are tons of local banks, not as many of the national banks. I typically see people come into this area and not recognize any of the names, besides probably bank of america.
Personally, I like the small ones like Citizens Bank Tri Cities and Tri Summit bank. I also really like Eastman Credit Union.

I use BB&T due to their Online Banking, convenient branches (everywhere on the east coast), financial stability in the current crisis, and ethical banking principles. A few years back BB&T refused to issue loans to private parties that received private property via imminent domain. That was a great thing for them to do.
A lot of people seem to like First Tennessee.

Their online banking is definitely a plus. Though they only go up to Maryland as far as on the east coast. They go through FL, AL, TN, IN KY and WV and everything in that hub. (Which is still convenient)

I use Greenbank which is now a regional (east & middle TN) bank, but started out in my hometown of Greeneville. Never had a really bad experience (well, except for them debiting my account one time 1600 by accident...) in all my 15 years of having an account there.

I have been very happy with Bank Of Tennessee. They have good rates and the Tellers are friendly. I have been with First Tennessee Bank and was not happy with them. Here is their link
