When funnel clouds were sighted in and around Rogersville Friday evening, the fire department activated the warning signal, a continuous three-minute blast from the fire whistle.

Rogersville Fire Department Assistant Chief David Jackson said Monday that it had been such a long time since the tornado warning had been signaled that many people didn’t know what it meant.

Oh dear, those clouds were ominous werent they?

Thats disturbing about the residents there not knowing what the blaring sirens meant. We have an occasional 10 second "test" of our warning signals in Bristol. If it was to sound, I am sure that many would not know what it meant either.

Default So how often does this happen?

I'm planning to move from NY to Church Hill TN and just read this. Now I'm nervous! I thought I read that tornadoes were rare around there. Scary for me. Blizzards seem so much safer. Guess I better read up on storm shelters. Even scarier is that we don't have a TV and I rarely have the radio on but I'm on the computer all the time so how would I know if something like that was on the way?

Tornadoes are VERY VERY rare here. I have never seen one and I've lived here my whole life. I've seen maybe 5 funnel clouds, but none of them have ever manifested. Our area is one of the safest in the country when it comes to tornadoes. All our cities are in the valleys and the mountain peaks tend to break up and weaken the storms before they actually get to us.

Tornadoes are the last thing to worry about in the TRI. That's why we are all so "excited" by this funnel cloud. BTW, did it ever even touch down?

Yes, as well as some up in adjacent southwest Virginia.
