Awesome Johnson City website (history, photos, etc)
I am not sure if its been posted here before, or who all has been to this, but oddly my uncle in Richmond emailed this link to me. I did not even know about it. Its a website dedicated to Johnson City with old photos, post cards, etc. I like the old photos- even the ones from the 1980s. It shows the hospital being built in 1979 and some photos of W. Market in 1986. Also shows the road (US 23) between JC and Kpt (now I26) when it was a 2-lane in the 50s! Photos of downtown Johnson City in the 1950s, etc!

Here is the main link... enjoy!

Does anyone know how long this site has been up?

Several years... I've posted the link before. It is definitely one of my personal favorites and gives a different kind of view of the city, especially the intriguing Little Chicago part. The guy who developed it is a great person and very dedicated to his city..
(Our building, the old Jones/Vance, I think is still on there)

I've explored this site many times. It's probably the greatest collection of JC history anywhere.

Strange I have never seen it or heard about it. I wish someone would do one for Bristol.

One thing I've always wondered is how people got to ETSU before State of Franklin (late 80s) and University Parkway (mid 70s) opened up.

My mom graduated from ETSU with her BS and then her MS in the 70's and then I graduated there twice in the 80's. When I went University Parkways was there but it wasn't the same name. Much time spent taking UP off of I-26 (which wasn't named 26 at the time) and up and down Roan Street. I learned the side streets of JC quite well back then. Not as many cars then as there are now. The Med Center was built in its' current location in the 80's. I remember when all that was at Exit 17 was the cemetery. I wish I had bought land back then.

I've often wondered that too. SMG, did the Parkway extend all the way through Tennessee Street to Lamont? If so, that would be the easiest way - from Market to Lamont to UP.
If not, ugh, I'd hate to imagine unless you did use 181 to UP. I guess lots of meandering through the Tree Streets. You could also get there through Antioch (cutting off Market at Center St) but that would be very long!

Yes, Jab, I think you are correct. UP went up into that residential areas and we had to take a right at the T and then a left on a two lane street. That dumped us out on Roan (hang a right at a gas station). I will have to go drive it again to check actual street names. I know they are doing major construction there now. Long overdue. Of course, we didn't complain, we just drove it. I also remember going through downtown and coming up through the tree streets sometimes. More so did that after I moved out of Lucille Clement dorm into a disgusting apartment in a house on Pine Street that I thought was wonderful back then because I was on my own.
181 was US 23 back in my day.
They had Poor Richard's Deli back then (and someplace called the SeaHorse iirc). I was happy. LOL
