Those are all good ideas.
Years ago in college one summer I got myself a good mower and weed eater and my pickup and kept myself happily employed mowing and mulching and trimming shrubbery for folks. I have had other friends pick up good side money cleaning and sealing or staining decks for people over the years. I had another friend who did real well by buying a power washer and cleaning sidewalks and patios and decks, etc. A former girlfriend's nephew detailed cars all summer for family and friends. A good detail job can be expensive so make a few calls to find out what the going pro rate is for that and other jobs and undersell them by 20 or 30 bucks and do superfine job and they'll tell their friends.
I've talked to a lot of older homeowner's over the years who have often lamented how hard it is to find folks to work around their homes doing small handyman jobs that they couldn't seem to get people to do or hauling stuff to the dump for them or cleaning out gutters, etc. Money wasn't the issue for those folks either, just getting someone who didn't have so many big jobs already to call them back was difficult. Word of mouth through churches, or bulletin boards, relatives, etc. is a great way to get your phone to ring. If you have a landlord or know someone who has rental properties talk to him/her. They're always looking for someone to do things around their properties and they're always looking for someone to mow etc. for a couple of bucks less than the last they guu they used to increase their bottom line. Get in with a few of them and they'll keep you busy. If they're slow to pay don't return their calls the next time.
Good luck to you!

Were you able to get your green card yet? That might open up some more possibilities. How are you liking it here?

Idea...
We have hauled off scrap metal and/or junk cars for people before to make extra money. The price is down right now so you really have to have A LOT of scrap to make some money. It's priced by weight.
At one time we could get around 300 bucks for a junker car on Stone Drive at the crusher. The last one we hauled off was a Chevy Baretta (sp?) and we got like 250 for it. Make sure everything is LEGIT before you haul one off for somebody, though.
Just advertise as "FREE removal...etc". That gets attention.

That seems a bit cold. What makes you assume he isn't a native son just trying to get through these hard times?
And even if he's not a natural born citizen he is asking for ideas about how to make an honest buck through hard work. I got no problem with any man or woman who asks such questions. We've got more than enough 'native sons' sitting on their butts 'drawing' and selling their Lortabs or Meth for a living. If this man wants to earn an honest buck, I say that's what America is supposed to be about...opportunity for people willing to earn their keep and sweat for a dollar!!!!

Wow. . .a bit angry today?
SMG was asking a question because many places will not hire you if you don't have a green card or work visa and are not a citizen on US. Most places are supposed to view IDs and make copies of them for the employee file (if they are following the law). And if you click on mark's name, you'll see that he's posted before and stated that he's from germany. Click --> http://www.city-data.com/forum/kings...nson-city.html

Also, mark, I would try looking in the JC press classifieds. Here's a link to it JohnsonCityPress.com - Classified Ads - Johnson City, TN. Just scroll down to the jobs part. And as I've stated before, I'm always very wary about craigslist job postings since a lot of the ones I've seen are scams trying to get your personal info ($40,000 for a secretary that works part-time. . .i don't think so).

FYI, the OP is from Germany, as indicated by previous posts. Thus the green card question.

As noted before, things are easy to read out of context in the virtual world. I just keep pi--ing people off here so I think I'll stick to the real world and find other things to do with my free time. I didn't take the extra hours to research each and every poster's background before commenting, my error. I just clicked on Markusde name and clicked through that area but see nothing other then a zipcode of 37601. Probably in some area I haven't discovered.
Best of luck to you all and I hope you will continue to have fun here and try and talk well about your fine community since so many potential businesses do consider these forums some times when they choose whether or not to relocate to a new area.
Sorry for stepping on so many toes, was never my intention.
